Okay so i have a 2000 lightning x1 and im having troubles and getting lost on how to fix it. To start i had the bike sitting while deployed overseas two years. So i changed out fuel, intake seals, fuel filter, injectors, battery, in tank fuel filter,o2 sensor, oil, spark plugs, wires... just about everything for a usual tune up. Here is the problem i cant even get it to stay running or rev whatsoever. I had installed ecmspy and attempted to find trouble codes and one said battery voltage low so i changed battery another said o2 sensor always lean so i changed that. I ran all diagnostics it would let me and everything came back fine. I did the tps reset and set afv back to 100 was at 150. What am i doing wrong? I had the trottle set to 5.1 degrees and it will fire then die fire then die. If i open it up to 10.0 degrees it will run a little higher in idle then die again. Cant seem to figure out what the issue is please help!

If your ECM is not cracked you may have a toasted cam position sensor.

I had inspected the ecm carefully for hairline cracks and didnt see anything there so im assuming thats ok. Is there a surefire way of testing the cam position sensor? Thank you for responding btw

Only if you have access to an oscilloscope. There is a check in the manual to see if it sparks when current flow is interrupted but no check for extra unwanted sparking. That's what I had on my S3; it would turn over and then sound like it was trying to run backwards as an extra spark hit way before TDC.

I used a $100 digital storage scope and was able to very effectively test the sensor.

Not a cheap tool, and not a great quality (durability) meter, but it is a VERY useful tool for diagnosing automotive electrical issues.

I got the DSO Nano V2, and am happy with it. There are older DSO Nano V1's as low as $70, and new 4 channel super ones for $200. I got the one in between.

You can search for them on Amazon or Ebay.

I could build a dedicated CPS sensor tester as well if there is enough interest... maybe $50 worth of hardware but a lot of development time, so it makes more sense to just get the nano and have something that works for everything else as well.

If the sidestand switch (if you have one) and the clutch safety switch (ditto) are not in a pre-fail or fail mode ....

A quick way to check the CPS is to take the cover off and look at it to see if it has signs of heat distress. And the connector under the primary sprocket cover.

And might not hurt to remember Al's (at American Sport Bike) primary rule of checking the last thing that was changed/worked on.

Hope this helps, Dave

Two guesses
1) ETS sensor is shorted. Usually where it comes out of the rocker box.
2) Intake seals aren't installed correctly. Use MAPP or propane gas, as little as possible at the tip, then come in from the backside and go over to each seal. If it speeds up, you've got a leak.

well thanks guys this is a great forum and i appreciate the help and knowledge. Im going to be replaceing both sensors after looking up pricing both sensors new is around $150 plus i hear the temp sensors are problematic and the timing isnt the greatest from the factory, the age of the bike also leads me to believe its time to replace them anyways. two seasons i tried checking the intake seals but cant keep bike running long enough for it to make a difference it wasnt noticeable with the propane compared to regular cranking. The only way to get it to get up over 1000 rpm is to open butterfly valve to 10 degrees and the propane doesnt make it go any higher so i think im good with the seals. Also if anyone has any buell race ecm maps that would be greatly appreciated as i have a vance and hines pipe and an americans sportbike oval air cleaner waiting for install once i overcome this issue and i had spoken to al at asb and he said the race ecm map was modeled around it and it should work well with that combo. thanks to all you are a great help

well after some electrical cleaning i found that it was corrosion on my battery ground along with a bad new battery! Glad i found the problem and thanks for the help it seems that electrical problems can cause all sorts of issues. On to the next project im in need of a buell race ecm fuel map to make the bike run right after my upgrades. any help would be appreciated

Good to hear. The simple things are often the last ones we think to check. Welcome to Badweb.
