My base gaskets started leaking slightly after I put about 500 miles on my 99 X1. I got it last Nov with only 6800 miles on it, so I'm not surprised about the leaks. However, over the last few hundred miles the leaks got worse. It seems to have leveled out, so to speak, but my concern is this soemthing that can wait until the winter, or should they be replaced immediately? | ||

Let it go for now more of an inconvenience issue then anything, except for it making things messy. | ||

replacing base gasket myself currently (after just putting it all back together after a rebuild, had a very small leak on rear cylinder) Its not that bad, dive into it and fix it | ||

Also, I rent and don't have a garage to do this in. I'm confident I can do anything myself with the right tools. Is this something I can tackle in the driveway in one day, or should I farm it out. | ||

This is a forgotten OLD SCHOOL way of changing the base gaskets ... Pull the cylinder up just past the wrist pin, remove the clip and wrist pin leaving the pistons in each cylinder ... | ||

i agree , i redid my whole bike inside this past winter, it did not fit in the door with the handle bars on but i got it in.  | ||

Imo not a driveway job, check local renta warehouses, I had a space for a couple of years, not convenient but dry , you can lock it and be sure to insure it, check with the managers before you rent some places dont allow work on site, others do, I had access to 120vAC by drop cord, potty on site, and it kept me from a lot of drive way projects at the apartment that I lived at. insure it for total value of bike and tools in case of theft. | ||

It can be done in a day if your willing to really put in the hours. Did mine earlier this season in my parking slab. Just a word of advice, use new rockerbox bolts when you so it. Mine got fatigued from taking the rockerbox on and off and snapped once. Wound up having to drill and helicoil. Might as well replace the pushrod guide seals and other gaskets while in there too. |
