Well I tried to get a black xbr12 yesterday but I was declined for credit. It really sucked too because I was able to talk the dealership down to 9,000 flat!!! On a 04' I'm so freakin bummed now. Guess I'll have to save up and try to get one that way. |

What bank were you going thru? Reason I ask is that its almost impossible to get turned down by HD credit. I know a couple people have, but not many. |

I went through HD credit. I was tur\rned down because I apparently have one charge off in the amount of 670 something dollars. They said that they wouldn't approve me until I got that taken care of. Problem is that it takes months to get a charge off, off of your report. By then I'll already miss the riding season not to mention that bike will probably be gone. That's why I just figure I save up for next spring. |

Gonzo, HD is tough. Try getting pre-approved from somewhere else....your bank or even online. Good luck. One charge off should not be too big a problem. |

HD credit is really fickle! You want to know the reason I was turned down? Because I had just moved! Even though the employer had not changed. Using the Court way way of communication, I was able to sway the powers that be. |

Gonzo, if you get the account paid have them send you proof of payment. HDcredit should accept that even though it will still show on your report. |

Yep, I had a $1400 charge off... They told me I had to take care of it. I called the credit card company, asked them if I could settle for $700, they agreed. I made them fax me a paper that said as much, I sent them $700, I made them fax me a paper that said I had indeed paid them and that it was/will be removed from my record. I faxed that to Dave at Appleton (Watterloo at that time) and all was good. Make sure you have a good paper trail and try to settle for as little as possible. |

Oh - DON'T GIVE UP!!! Between that and trying to find insurance it took nearly three months for me to get my 12R. Worth every second of it . |

What exactly is a "charge off"? If you don't mind my asking. Thanks. |

I had a credit card from Goodyear. I charged $500 for a clutch and didn't pay them (I don't think they replaced the clutch, I was young, etc...). They wrote it off (It's been years). That's a charge off. I have another one, but it's not credit card debt so it's not looked at the same way by a bank. |

M1...Not prying (just looking for a reference point) but am interested in when the transaction took place and when Goodyear did the charge off. Example: The transaction was in 1995 and the charge off was in 2000. Thanks. You don't have to reply if you don't wish to. |

The transaction was late 97. I think about September. The charge off was probably about the time that goodyear sent the debt to their collection agency. I paid them in November of 03. The original amount was $517 and in those years the interest jumped it up to $1400. They settled for 50%. I think if I could have done it for a little less but I wanted them to say yes or I wouldn't have been able to finance the bike . I ended up selling my Benelli M1-Combat for $650 and paid the other $50 out of pocket. I still need to replace the Benelli. |

Ok, short term stuff. I was interested as to how long a charge off stays on your credit history. Now I am wondering if the clock starts ticking when it is turned over to a collection department or agency or when you settle with the collections folks? Sorry to hear about your Benelli. I remember your posts about shooting on the BWB. Bummer. |

Some friendly advice from the law firm of Been There, Done That, & Sons NEVER PAY ANY MONEY TO A COLLECTION AGENCY. In many (or most) cases, a creditor will "sell" a debt to a collection agency for a fraction of what the outstanding balance is. This way the creditor gets at least a little money. The collection agency makes their money by collecting the debt from you. In fact, by sucking it up and dealing directly with the original creditor, you may even be able to not only negotiate a lower payoff but you may be able to negotiate what they report to the 3 major credit bureaus. (Example: Slow Pay vs Charge Off) Of course, the best rule is to not let yourself get far enough in debt so that you don't have enough cash available to make at least a minimum payment on each of your outstanding monthly debts. But hey, stuff happens to all of us. Creditors know that and in most cases are very willing to work around that. And just in case I forgot to mention, NEVER PAY ANY MONEY TO A COLLECTION AGENCY.
