Hey guys i really need to change the trans fluid on my 2000 X1 but not 100% on where to drain/fill the fluid as well as the best fluid to replace it with. any help or instructions is greatly appreciated.

Also i went for ride the other day and i think my clutch might be slipping. Doesnt matter what gear i am in, but when i ride around normally the bike is fine but when i really get on the throttle the rpms raise abnormally fast and then slowly drop back . it sounds exactly like it would for a rolling burnout. like if you were riding and then just floored it and then the tire looses traction and then slowly gains it again. I am about 99% sure i am not spinning the rear wheel when this happens lol. My bike has 8,000 miles on it. is this a common issue?

Make sure your clutch cable is properly adjusted. Your clutch should still be fine after only 8K miles.

The drain plug is under the engine on the left hand side above the muffler.

Fill it with whatever oil your religion dictates : )

I use the same oil I use in the engine, some prefer gear lube or Sportrans. HD now recommends SYN3 in engine and transmission vs. Sportrans so I use Mobil1 or Amsoil, or any other high quality fully synthetic oil.

awesome thank you. i thought i had the clutch adjusted right. but in any case, what is the propper way to adjust it? also, where you re fill the trans fluid

You put the trans fluid into the derby cover, which you will have off to adjust the clutch anyway.

I think the clutch adjustment is in the owners manual, as well as the service manual. If you used the procedure in the 96 S1 manual (which is online here) that should work fine.

And to further clarify hoot's answer, you can put engine oil in either the engine or transmission (particularly if it is good full synthetic).

You CANNOT put transmission oil in either the engine or transmission. The transmission oil (sport trans or formula plus) has additives that really help oil life in a transmission, will be no end of badness if they end up burning in a combustion chamber.

I'm not a Harley fan boy, and I don't use Harley motor oil, but the Formula Plus is good stuff for a tranny... full synthetic like Mobil 1 gear oil, but it won't eat yellow metals like Mobil 1 gear oil will.

Have a 111,671.23 miles on my 1997 S3T and have run engine oil(H-D 20W50) from my first transmission change(5K) to now ...

Works for me !!!
