I think I already know the answer to this but I need the powers to be here help out. I was out riding to a buddies house and was running about 70mph and the bike just stopped running. I'm like 150 miles from the house but only 20 from his so I call and his on his way to come rescue me 20 minutes later the bike starts right up again. While waiting I took the seat off and inspected the ECM, it' has no apparent cracks, no rain, but ECM was hotter than h-ll. I bought this used last year and PO had put a K&N filter and D&D exhaust on it. So if I need to replace ECM do ya think I should just get the RACE ECM? Also where can I get one fairly quickly (had to use his second car to get home so gotta get it back) and fair price? Thanks in advance. |

It may not even be the ECM, there's probably a hundred possibilities. Check the ECM for hairline cracks, especially around the grey connectors. After checking grounds, that would be my next thing to check. Also wiggle check around the steering head and handlebar controls. Check the ignition switch itself. It can even be vapor lock. Check the fuel tank vent tube for kinks or obstructions. Might be a free fix. |

I did check connections on ECM and inspect to see if it was cracked. I can call my friend that has bike at his house, (150 miles away) and see if he can recreate it but I messed with the switches when I was stopped. I didn't check the vent tube. |

I failed to mention this as well.........When bikes cold on start up it hesitates to start (have to hit starter twice) also it backfires when I decelerate which I don't remember it doing when I first bought it. It has the D&D exhaust and K&N air filter with stock ECM and in the back of my mine I blamed it on that I looked at EBR and they have an ECM for $305. |

BAS can cause the same symptoms. Happened on my X1 to me 4 times over a few months. Turned it off via ECMspy. |

BAS is Bank Angle Sensor. It's supposed to shut the motor off, if you tip over. There were problems related to the BAS, and a factory recall still covers a free replacement/relocation. The stock location is below the ECM connectors. I haven't had mine done yet. I don't know about the ECM being hot, but it doesn't sound good. |

To Arry; Thanks for the info. I ordered a EBR ECM and should have it Wed. I have my buddy checking connections ect on it in his shop. Either way I get a ECM thats new and programmed for my D&D exhaust |

I had a BAS fail. It would kill the bike as if you hit the kill switch. Cycle it on and off again, and it would start right back up and run just as before until it would just randomly die again. I also had an ECM fail. The bike would cough, sputter, stumble and backfire once the bike got hot. It took quite a while to narrow it down to the ECM. Though the ECM was my first suspect, another Uly rider put it on his bike for a week and it ran perfectly for him, so I figured that wasn't the problem. I pretty much disassembled the bike three times over several months checking grounds, testing wires and connectors individually, testing sensors, etc. until I finally just bought a new ECM out of hope and desperation. Worked like a charm. Hope it cures your maladies as well! |

Thanks Buewulf, It took about 20minutes before it would start again and it ran badly after it started for the first mile or so. It just hasn't been running as smoothly as it first did. I'm gonna try the ECM and we'll see what happens. |

High temperatures create havoc with the ECMs...and for one reason that doesn't immediately jump out. When it gets really hot out, the plastic in the seat softens just enough to allow it to press down on the ECM. Trust me, I spent three nights in Missoula last summer because of this. |

@ Skifastbadly, I gonna relocate the new one when I get it. I'm also going to try and put a switch in where I can manually turn fan on. Every bike has quirks, if not for Forums like this one we'd all be lost....LOL |

On bikes without comfort kit, rear cyl air is discharged under the seat. It's a hostile environment for anything electronic. |

UPS just delivered my RACE ECM. I'm gonna install it tomorrow. Just wondering, it's pre-programmed and a '08 so I don't do the TPS reset correct? |

You still need to do a TPS reset, it takes only a minute to do anyway. |

I drove out to East Texas to where my bike stopped running and put the new ECM in and did the TPS reset. What a great improvement! Idles better, more power. Rode about 130 miles back home with no problems and it's almost 100f out today |

Thanks ULYNUT, I temporarly repositioned it with nylon ties for the ride home to make sure this stays good...LOL I don't see any cracks on this unit I removed but maybe it has cracked soldering connections inside? |

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/673617.html?1334364964 My original ECM was giving me random issues, replaced it with a used '07 unit. Fixed everything including the ridiculous pinging plaguing my '06 since new. If you look at the ECM plugs from the old one, from the side, you can see they're not parallel with each other or the case. Seems possible to me, even with two of the seat spacers installed, that the heat under the seat could allow the front mounting point on the plastic shock shroud to flex around under seat pressure while the rear stays put bolted to steel. Would seem to me that could flex the ECM over time. Maybe. I think. |
