SKF bearing, 33,000 miles before it puked out it's grease. The right one went, it must be either water and grit getting in or the load from the brake is too much for the skinny thing. Back to riding the X1W for a bit. |

I pulled the seals and the l/h one had white grease, the r/h one's grease had turned to brown crud. I packed them w/ HarLee's blue wheel bearing grease and all is well again. The next time the rear wheel is off I think I'll try Valvoline Moly Grease in the bearings and see if that helps prolong the life. I also stuck in some SBS sintered pads in the front as the Ferodos were getting thin. They certainly have more initial bite than the Ferodos but only time will tell if they cause pulsing at the lever. |

I checked my old Haynes manual. It has a glossary of English to American but I couldn't find grease. So since I couldn't find a proper answer, lets just say, it's what guys in the 1950's put in their hair. |

It's this weird goop that's kind of a cross between cranberry sauce and Crisco which you will not find in your wheel bearings. To spur me into pulling apart the rear wheel bearing seals the Useless helpfully popped it's belt in two a few minutes ago. Belt - 62,300 miles Time Spent Communing With Your Motorcycle - Priceless Anyone got a spare belt for sale? I'm just glad it wasn't inside of the tranny as they cunningly got rid of that pesky trap door doohickey. P.S. Sorry, I shouldn't complain, 62K on a belt is pretty good. It's just aggravating the way this bike is fighting me on it's way to 100,000 miles before tear down. (Message edited by SteveFord on July 22, 2012) |
