OK, since I'm a total noob at owning one of these things, I'm going to start asking questions to get myself an education!

First off with a bodywork question: How can you tell the difference between an S2 fairing and front fender and an S3?

Material. S2 parts are itchy fiberglass, while the S3 has plastic. The front fenders are pretty close, but different enough to be different.

FYI, there are 2 different S2 front fenders; '95 style, and '96 style. I prefer the 1996 style (no through hole in the external surface to get to the lower mount point), but I've got a '95 style custom CF front fender on my S2.

A good way to tell the S3 front fairing is that the screens in the vents are taped (double sided VHB tape) in place, while the S2 vents are secured with screws (into built up bondo).

That covers the basics...

CONGRATS on the S2!

c'mon Brankin...you're slipping.

S3's have a MUCH smaller headlight, along with everything else you mentioned.

OK, haven't been asking my daily questions so I'll ask a few to make up for it!

What are the mirrors REALLY supposed to look like? How about the turn signals?

Is it possible to get replacement screens for the tail, mine are missing? Also, nowhere to mount a plate, what did the original mount look like?

And finally, was cardboard optional??

You have a stock mirror, but the rubber boot is missing.

There is supposed to be black material hanging down from the tail section to mount not only the tag, but also the turn signals. Think "M2".

I believe screens are available. Check with a dealer, or look on eBay, I seem to recall seeing some not too long ago. In a pinch? Go to Home Depot and get some of the "expanded metal" gutter guard stuff and cut it to fit. You'd be surprised how "right" it looks - it's that close to the real thing.

Cardboard was a field upgrade. The adjusting screws for the headlight liked to pull out of the fiberglass, so it's an "anti-rattle" feature ; )

"How about the turn signals?"

Those are stock, but not for that model year. I was unable to find original signals for mine, and am putting XB signals on, just like the PO did with yours. They're cheap enough, and I like the way they look, with the smoked cover over the inner orange. And they're massively flexible, and less likely to break in a tipover than a signal with a rigid stem.

Thanks guys, is it possible to get just the rubber cover for the mirrors?

Next question: Will an S3 windshield fit an S2, or is it unique?

Won't fit.

Gustafsson plastics in St Augustine, FL, still makes S2 windshields. You want stock clear? Light tint? Deep tint? (I just counted 15 color choices on their website for an S2, stock height). Stock height? +2"? +4?

www.bikescreen.com

I got a +4", stock tint, for winter use from them a few years ago. Fits absolutely perfectly, no fidgeting required. Have a stock height for summer use and swap when it gets cold.

Are there any other mirrors that will fit an S2, not having luck finding replacements or "rubbers" for the ones I have?

There was a thread on that about snowmobile mirrors that would fit with a small modification.
My filing system is improving!

If memory serves, there is a set of Kawasaki mirrors that work to.
Ricky used them on a couple of custom S2 back in the day.

I'll try to fine the info. If memory serves, they were about $60 for the set.
