Thanks for the "how to" mikethediabetic!

^^^That thread inspired me to give her a go. I went about it a little differently and made a plug out of foam and am relatively pleased with the result. I may make a second go at it and make one a little lower. Thanks again for showing me how easy it could be. Attached are some photos I took along the way.

Question.. what kind of material is used on race bikes for a seat pad? Adhesive backed neoprene? I want to make a pad for the front of the cowl. Thanks!

"what kind of material is used on race bikes for a seat pad?"

A large tire patch.

A tire patch? Really? Haha.. nice.. I was thinking of cutting up an old wet suit and using spray adhesive. Either that or jet ski foot well pads... they are kinda spendy to just cut off a chunk.

Michael,

Nice job!

Our old Yamaha roadracers had neoprene foam pads like thick wet suit material that was glued to the fiberglass seat base.

I recently had a cover and pad made for a fiberglass cafe seat I made and the upholstery shop guy used some high density foam.

Check with your local auto upholstery shop.

Also a question:

Did yo use acetone to remove the foam plug or did you simply pull it out of the fiberglass part intact?

Thanks Dave.

I had hoped to pull it out in one piece but the shape was under-cut a bit so it was stuck pretty good. I just cut a few chunks out with a knife and collapsed the plug in on its self. Came right out after that. Acetone as in melt the plug out? Good idea if it was a trickier shape to remove.

Any time Nate. I make early evening rides out skyline or up to bald peak regularly after work and weekends. Longer rides on occasion.

I live less than 5 mins from you!

Bikes looking good sir. I like the XB wheel swap. I may get around to it one day.

Let me know if you dont get my PM. Sometimes they dont go through for me.

Good question sir... I was going to glass in some "L" brackets like mikethediabetic did but realized I cant because of the shape. Still working that part out. Maybe nylon strap around the underside of the seat? Not sure yet. Would be nice to be able to easily remove it... some decent storage under there! Open to suggestions.

My Ducati seat cowl has a lip on the bottom edge so that it slides onto the seat from the rear and is just a friction fit. It requires the seat to be removed (just a key turn away) to remove it. Not sure if that's doable on your design though. If not, maybe you could attach some little webbing material tabs with velcro that mate up with velcro on the seat bottom. Between the tabs getting pinched between the subframe and seat, and the velcro it should be pretty well attached yet easily removed once the seat is off.

I wish I could do that Imaposer.. the two forward lower edges are narrower that the seats middle. I can only drop it on from the top. I am going to pick up some nylon and elastic straps and play around with em tonight. probably grab some velcro too now that ya mention it. Maybe glue buckles on the inside so I dont have to try and glue straps directly to the fiberglass.

I found the perfect pad too. Slalom waterskis have a pad on them for your back foot! Closed cell black foam with adhesive backing! It has a cool texture to it as well. Bingo!

I like the friction fit idea , poser suggested.Would mean a redo , but you have the template .
And velcro in the back to hold it in place against the back of the seat .

May work , may not .

I very well make another, but will figure something out for this one since I have this much time into it.

There are 3 smooth spots on the underside of the seat. I am thinking of using small elastic straps with heavy duty velcro tabs sewn to them. Should fit snug. Just picked up some glazing putty from my painter... he pointed out all the flaws and recommended I sand all the primer off and get a better surface first. I hoped I could bury all the flaws with primer.. I was wrong. That's what I get for jumping the gun. I wanted to see it black!!

hey nicely done on the seat cowl! glad that i could help. i really like how your seat and tank are the same level. it would be cool if you could copy some of the lines from your tank into the seat cowl. either way it looks great.

Thanks again Mike! I sketched it up on some photos I took of my bike and level with tank was what I thought looked best. After making it it kinda looks a bit tall and chunky to me. I dunno.. I am my own worst critic. I did attempt to take some cues from the lines on the tank. The topside follows the lines on the top of the tank back to the seat and I rolled the edges over kinda like the sides in front of my knees. I debated scooping the sides out and making nostrils like the tank but thought it may be hard to glass.

Mike.. it looked like you used the FG sheets that are random strands rather than the tightly woven cloth I used? I think that stuff would be easier in corners and odd shapes. There may be a v2.0 in the future!

I have some tank fillers on the way too! I had planned on painting the cowl black to match my fender, but with all that carbon fiber on the tank only.. think it will look odd. May I will paint my tank and fillers too.. hmmmf.

NW - very cool mod youve done there!

Maybe I missed it, but is there anything under the cowl? Anyway to access the area under it?

Would make a great place for tools/etc

Thanks hybrid... there is quite a bit of room.. its sits over my stock seat so a good 3x6" spot tapering down toward the back. I think a mini tool kit is in order.. with extra room for smokes and sunglasses. : )
