Buell has come down $500.00 dollars on all the bikes for 05.

XB9R & XB9SX $8699

XB12R & XB12S $10499

I think Central has them marked $100.00 over MSRP.

every time my tuber breaks.... I look closer at the XB line, a reliable platform right out of the box!!

Mobbers...

Has the idea of a club patch gone south?

Look at the Quick Board and look at the "Got my new lid" thread... the graphic on the back of the helmet might be a idea to steal for a Mobber image.

Just a thought!

I got my replacement motor mount today, found a set of left twist bits and easy outs at Clark Tool for $30, found a can of blue hightemp paint to fix the boo boo on my exhaust header and talked to some coatings professionals about the best way to do the spot repair to keep the hot spot from rusting out.
A friend of mine has a right angle air drill I can use this weekend, and hopefully I can get enough time off work to get r done.

Fuscat...

Yes... tonights episode of the Independence version of Monster Garage is still a go! I should be ready to find how how badly I have screwed up your Honda by 6:00 pm.

Mobbers...

My intelligence sources tell me that those Mobbers who did not make Wednesday night bike night may have missed the opportunity of a life time. It seem that Gail and her posse was handing out free t-shirts as people rode in to the lot. I know there may be some very depressed Mobbers, I know I am broken hearted, who missed a chance at a BRIGHT orange T-shirt with Gail's HD logo and such. YOU have missed the opportunity to ride around the metropolitan area as a rolling billboard for Gail in bright orange. Maybe it is the fact that I see people dressed on orange everyday at work that causes anything orange to NOT be in my wardrobe! If we need to establish a support group for those who missed out... we should address that at the next BRAG meeting.

Paul...

Having just posted the above information... let me know if we need to put a suicide watch for you and/or any of your co-workers!!

I scored a Snap On 3/8 drive torque wrench ($200 on their website) for $100 today. It has a real small head so it might be easier to get it on the hanger nut. I have been needing to get a torque wrench anyway, glad I got this instead of one at Sears or otherwise.
I have all the parts and stuff I need to get the motormount and broken stud fixed, my buddy Tiger just got a new Makita right angle electric drill that has a light that illuminates your work and variable speed control lock, *SWEET* that should help make the bolt removal a little easier, hopefully I can be off work Saturday to get r done, watching all the scooters passing trough the area for Sturgis is hurting me, I would love to get out and cruise a few miles of interstate with some of these folks as they go through the area.

The adventures of Mr. Badwrench...

Well... I still can't believe that Fuscat actually let me work on his Honda. A bike for his wife who was beginning to make threats of confiscating the Buell from him as she really wanted to get out on two wheels. We all know about the Casio watch incident, which by the way Derek insisted I take my watch off while working on his engine and HE kept custody of it until all tools were back in the drawers. Everyone cries for Shazam for his grenaded engine... but everyone forgets I lost a perfectly good watch. Offers of special assistance were made by the shop which built his engine quickly came... but did even one Walmart offer to help me replace my watch??? NO!!!

Anyway... this was the project. Take a 1976 (give or take) Honda CB550 which had set outside for four years and bring it back to life. When it all began it had trashed carbs from setting and drying out as the gasoline evaporated, the front brake master cylinder leaked like a lawn sprinkler when the lever way squeezed, the front caliper was frozen from weather and lack of use, gas lines and O rings had dry rotted, the exhaust was covered in rust, the mini ape hangers were equally covered in rust, the center stand was shaped much differently than Mr. Honda had engineered, and there were some issues with the wiring for the lights. A project that at first evaluation I think caught Derek by surprise as to the magnitude, and did again as it unfolded with the insane cost of new parts for a old bike.

The first disaster was the carbs. It looked like they had been through atomic bomb testing in some part of Area 51! It took me, Derek and my son to clean the carb bodies in and out. At first it was looking like they would have to be replaced. Let me someday tell you the look on Derek's face when he found out the price for four carbs! It took the better part of a coupla days... but it looked like we could salvage them... except for the floats. They had issues!!! At least until Derek priced the floats, about $40.00 each... then they seem to look not quite so bad! The big worry was had they "water logged" from the nasty gasoline that they had soaked in as it evaporated. We cleaned them up a bit... and I test them to see if they would float. Good news... they all floated exactly the same... they could be salvaged. It took a bunch of work... but the carbs were cleaned and rebuilt... and they looked better than we thought they ever could!!

Next was the front brake system. I told Derek it might be a good idea to get a new setup top to bottom, as I was doubtful that anything other than the rotor could be salvaged. Derek had his second bout with chest pains when he price that... that almost made four carbs look cheap by comparison! He found a master cylinder rebuild kit and scrounged around a bike salvage yard and it sounds like he got into every CB550 there before he found a piston that was usable. Disassembling the master cylinder was like taking apart something that has sunk with the Titantic, gooped up after setting in the ocean for decades!!! But... we finally got it apart with a minimum amount of swearing and hammering! Then the next hurtle was the new brake pad... you couldn't have got it into the recess with a 30 ton press... not right where the index pin held it in alignment. So while Derek and my son when to find some brake pad lube... I got out the trusty dremel tool and solved the problem. All was fine until I remembered I had failed to tell Derek he would need new crush washers for the banjo bolt! So... the following weekend he arrived with the washers, and we commenced to assemble the system so we could bleed the system. One petty little detail snagged us, the service manual he bought has almost no torque specs! So... after finding what we could in that manual, in a BMW manual, a Yamaha manual, a Blast manual, and a little deductive reasoning... relatively good torque guestimations were calculated... and all went together well.

Early in the project I had half lost what little mind I have left trying to figure out the lighting wiring which defied a few details of what shoulda been as in the manual... and got all lights and electrical working, including a turn signal buzzer! The nimble little Japanese guy that plugged in all those connectors inside the head light bucket must have has hands the size of a leprechaun! It seemed to be about the size of a shot glass as I when through it all to get all lighting, blinking and blairing functioning! All was right... and I had flash backs of a similar flirt with madness when I rewired a CB175 when I came back from Korea when I bought the bike for next to nothing from a Lieutenant who had given up on ever getting anything electrical to work. This was a relief... as I never want to deal with connectors in a Honda head light bucket ever again!

THEN... Derek unknowing led me to the edge of pushing the Honda in the creek behind the house and telling him it had been stolen! He walks in the shop with a nice set of handle bars from the salvage yard and says... "I think these will look nice on the Honda". I politely smiled and said... "Have you ever changed handle bars on a Honda before?" knowing the answer before I even asked it! Once again Derek was surprised with the task of getting all those wire through the itty bitty holes in the handle bars. AND THEN...the realization that all those connectors in the head light bucket would have to be pulled to get the old bars off and reconnected once again! If I had a semi-functional memory I would have remembered that we had a connector that was not used, and a pair that connected that the colors mis-matched, and was no way like the wiring diagram. But I must have blocked that out, thinking I would never again have my hands in that head light bucket. So... after an hour of trying to figure out and trouble shooting every single connector and going through the wiring diagram about a hundred times... I connected the mis-matched connectors that made no sense as to why all matched except that pair... and viola... the head light once again worked! I marked the unused stray connector so it might jog my memory if I ever am blackmailed into working in that head light bucket again!

I would now like to give any of you a tip on carb reassembly on the mounting plate. Line up all linkage as your set them into place... and never think that you will be able to get the two gas lines on those buried T fitting after it is all bolted together!!! That manual never said a word about connecting the gas lines before bolting everything together!!! The second time I put it together was a little easier and took less time than the first time!!!

The headers and exhaust basically went on without a hitch with two little problems. The center stand piece that sticks out to place a foot on was NO PLACE near the place on the muffler where it was supposed make contact when it was up... and there were no torque specs for the header nuts. See above for the torque solution... and it is amazing what one can do with a four foot pipe and a 32 oz ball-peen hammer!!!!

SO... Derek made plans for the final items before taking the bike for safety inspection. Me, figuring that adjusting the carbs would somehow become a disaster of once again taking them off the bike, did a little work without Derek. Wednesday night I finished bleeding the brakes and replacing all hoses. Leaving just the task of getting the bike running (new spark plugs had been put in someplace in the other segments), so the carbs could be synchronized. I figured that for some unknown reason it was going to take the better part of the evening to get the bike running well enough to sync the carbs. So... gas tank off, the mechanics version of an IV bottle was rigged to feed fuel, about a pint of fresh gas was poured in... the shut-off valved opened... and the gas slowly disappeared to a lower level indicating it was filling the bowls. I was fully expecting to see a puddle of gas on the ground... but that never happened. I think a minor miracle had been witnessed. The choke was closed... the starter button was pushed... and the major miracle then happened... after four years, the engine immediately came to life in a smooth sound of a good idle!

I was still expecting a disaster getting the carbs in sync... but calmly hooked up my sync tool. Key on... touch the started button and the engine instantly came to life just barely having to touch the starter button! The carbs were in sync in no time with but one little knot in my stomach. I was almost at the point where they were all balanced when the engine started to stumble and the vacuum began to strangely fluctuate. I was thinking... "Gee I knew this was going too well!", and I adjust a little more and it got worse. Here is a tip for those of you that may someday run an IV bottle fuel system. IT HELPS IF YOU PUT ENOUGH GAS IN THE D*MN THING TO FINISH THE JOB! Yep folks... the engine was stumbling and the vacuum was fluctuating because the bike was running out of gas! DUH!!!! So... a pint more gas... a couple of more turns... and the carbs were balanced. All was locked down... and both Derek and I looked dumbfounded with amazement, when every time the starter button was barely touched... the engine jumped to life and ran smooth as silk. An engine that had sat for four years, that was almost 30 years old, and that had over 20,000 miles on the odometer! The damn thing ran smooth, strong, and sounded great!

So... short of a few petty things to finish up Saturday... Mrs. Derek now has a bike to learn on!

(formerly dasxb9s... still nuts!)

hahaahahha!! Good stuff! Yea I was amazed at how this thing turned out! Even though the price of new parts made my insides hurt everytime the person on the other end relayed them to me. It was still a great experience to take it from a parked bike that didn't look like much and bring it back to life! Believe it or not I had confidence in Dennis the whole time. (scary and suicidal I know but even still) Once again Dennis Thank You!! (Mrs. Derek thanks you too she was very excited to hear it was done!!)

Paul,im cofused? Why is Gail dumb?Have you heard of E-Bay?I know of several people, myself included, who have bought parts and sold them for alot more than we paid for them.Does that make us stupid? If anyone is stupid, its those who are willing to pay much more than the parts cost.Gail isnt stupid, unless being a good business person labels you as such.We all know Gails bikes, and parts, are over list, but the ones who buy them are the stupid ones!I think its a good thing to get richer every day if you can do it legally.Paul,if your boss offered you 6$ per, hour over scale, would you turn it down?Im sure you would say thank you all the way to the bank, but if anybodys stupid,it would be your boss for paying you 25%+ - over scale. If you are wanting to point fingers, you can drive to Gails and tell all those who bought their bikes there, and paid over list, what a bunch of dumb bioches they are,let me know when you decide to go,I will bring the camcorder.

Is this the day of MidAmerica PowerSports Plus OPEN HOUSE?

I thought it was August 7th... Anyone stopping by?

I think they are doing F-USA type dyno-runs for $30. Which is good for 1 run I believe, it is not a test & tune multiple run,,,

I'll check back here, I will be doing some running around today... TCB. So let me know if anyone is interested...

I'm still forced to cage, got the muffler bracket designed and cut. Just need to weld and grind to fit. The little things that take time...

Dennis, that handle bar story reminded me or my old 1975 350 honda.I was riding it back in 1977,the right side of the handel bar broke in half, rode it that way out to Dells Honda, interesting ride, in Blue Springs when it was on 40 HWY.Bought new handles bars and changed them out in the parking lot!I TOTALLY understand feeding the wires thru those tiny holes. Those older Hondas seem to just keep on going, and going, and going.........

I told Derek that if he needed more done in that head light bucket... he might need to fine someone else more mentally stable than me to do it. One more time... and it just might push me over the edge!!!

Mrs. Derek was all smiles when we took her 1976 CB550 Honda to her after we got it inspected today. She was very happy!!
