Checking out a bike that I was thinking of buying, but then I saw this picture. I'm supposed to drive 4 hours tomorrow to look at it, but I may save my gas. Owner says he never noticed it. Looks kinda like an exhaust leak and some kind of red tape... What do you think? http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa66/cgocifer/Bike/2012-04-21_18-14-25_368.jpg (Message edited by cgocifer on April 21, 2012) |

Odd. Maybe its just a red powder coated exhaust flange. It looks pretty clean... |

When I zoom in, something looks odd. Almost looks as if the header flange is missing and the stud and nut are either broken or missing the nut... Also, not sure if that's dust or carbon from a leak. Says he has popping on deceleration and some idling issues but attributes that to some tuning issues he's been having after installing a "customized" stock exhaust can. Almost looks like tape hiding something for pictures... |

My first thought was similar to Reep's in that it looks awfully clean to be accidental or an after thought. I would maybe ask for more close ups from various angles before making a drive like that. For the "popping", I had what I think was a similar behavior after going to a higher performance exhaust with a stock ECM. Once I went to a properly tuned Race ECM that was gone. I've run 2 different higher performance mufflers and both were similar with the stock ECM and both showed the exact same behavior with the Race ECM (with the correct map of course). This is also assuming that what he is describing is the same thing that I experienced. |

Turns out that it was a reflection and camera flare from the red bike stand that it was on. Still, I ended up passing on the bike. Some additional pictures showed some oil residue on the jugs near the head gaskets on both jugs, a fair amount of rust on the bolts, dents and scrapes on the primary cover from the shifter linkage after two tip overs, and some scrapes on the swing arm from passenger boots. The chin fairing has a rattle can job on it with bright orange BUELL logos painted on, and the windscreen has been painted flat black. Good price for a 2006 ($4100 with 3700 miles), but there are other bikes with similar miles and fewer issues and are closer than 4.5 hours away. My truck gets 14 mpg on a good day. Plus, I got called out of town for work so I wasn't able to make the trip anyway. |
