darthane: the pitch ratio for each drive sprocket SET is fixed, and is exactly equal to the ratio of teeth, not diameter. the belt or chain is driven by the teeth, and the rpm ratio between the countershaft and wheel will be in direct proportion to that tooth ratio. the actual ratio of my chain drive is 2.381, very slightly taller than the stock belt ratio of 2.407 it is quite possible that my perception of seat of the pants power is skewed by my own labor on the project. i do know for certain that my chain drive sportster is very much easier to push around the garage than wifes belt drive, and the buell is also noticeably easier to move around without its belt on. also if any one wishes to transpost to Knowledge Vault that would be cool |

Ahh, OK. Thanks for the info! (sorry if that seemed like a dumb question, but you never learn if you don't ask) |

as far as testing the new system goes, i am presently using an old chain off my sportster conversion, with 10,000 extremely hard abusive miles on it (the chain) and a used dodge diesel fan belt idler pulley with 116,000 miles on it ( the idler not a misprint, the truck now has 238,000 miles on it) so all i did was vigorously flog the XB for a couple laps around town, then took it home, for a total of 20 miles. going to fetch a new idler wheel from parts house today, and i have a tsubaki o-ring chain on order should be arriving next week. wont be doing any big mileage testing this weekend on account of my 40th birthday celebration which will start after close of business friday, and degenerate into drunken melee by saturday evening. wife will be disabling all motorvehicles at some point early on saturday. will post pics if any images survive. |

I posted on another thread a guess of about $250 (i think)...for all parts on a conversion. I was pricing out of a Custom Chrome catalog, but how close was that?? |

Before you all go off trying to reinvent the wheel, Realize those four center placements are critical to constant belt tension. Change anyone of them and you better spring load the idler. Unless of course you will be running the chain/belt looser than stock to compensate for your mistake! Sure the stock system's tension isn't absolutely constant over the 5" of rear wheel travel, but it's as close as a few million computations could get it given the available space to locate the largest possible idler. |

Hey Fullpower, how is that chain conversion doing these days?? Everything still working ok?? Did you keep any of the measurements you made when you were looking for parts?? The reason i ask is that they never sold a '93 Dodge D350 6L pickup in Australia (I know, our loss)... So, I'm guessing you just got an idler with the right ID for the bearing?? I also figured the front sprocket is just a '91/'92 HD sportster XLH sprocket?? How did you know to use the 0.20" shim?? Was that a calibrated eyeball thing or did you compare the XB and Sportster front pulleys?? Also, Vortex list a 520 chain rear sprocket in a 48 or 49 tooth application... How did you get a 50 tooth 530 chain rear sprocket?? Or is their website simply out of date?? You don't have any form of cush drive... How's that going for you?? Thanks, I may well NEED this info if they won't cover my belt under warantee. The rubber isn't damaged but the kevlar weave is hanging out all over the place. Be buggered if I'll foot a $430 (that's right $430AUD) bill every 6,000k's. |
