OK, so I'm going to be cutting an exhaust stud removal tool in the next week or so, wanted to ask about the drill bit size... Should I use a 1/4 inch bit or an F bit. The F bit is the correct size for the 5/16-18 tap and is .257 inches, the 1/4 inch is of course .250. The question really comes up because a center drill (#3) has a 1/4 inch "shank" and would fit right in the 1/4 inch drill bushing to give you a good solid starter hole. | ||

I would give it a try with lots of cutting fluid, extra back-and-forth motion, and a sharp tap, it's only 0.007" difference. Like you said it seems like the simple way to go as far as your tool design. | ||

You could make the tool to fit the F bit, and grind a #2 center drill to the same o.d. if you really wanted to use a center drill. The tool should prevent the drill bit from running off center, so I'm not too sure how much you would gain from starting with a center drill. | ||

Jims tool uses a 1/4 in bit.. If everything works perfectly the treads of the stud are left in the hole and a clean out tap removes them leaving you with the original treads. |
