Today I was a bit bored so I went out to the garage to "play". I ended up building a larger windscreen for my XB9S in hopes it will block some wind allowing me to be a touch more comfortable riding in the cold later this year. Well here are the pics... I still need to go get some paint to make it match the rest of the bike.

what kind of material did you use to make that? This looks like an interesting mod. I may try this on my city-X |

It was made from sheetmetal. I am not exactly sure the thickness of it. I had it in the garage from patching floor panels in the 1985 Ramcharger I use to have |

Looks pretty cool. Post more when you get it painted please. |

Sweet and innovative, BUT aren't you worried about it becoming a guillotine???? |

Bones brings up an important point. There's a reason why these things are never made out of metal. |

Sweet and innovative, BUT aren't you worried about it becoming a guillotine???? I thought of that today when I was riding down the freeway and went to tuck in behind it. I might use it for a template to mold one out of fiberglass. |

I would really like to use one of the full race style fairings for the Firebolt, but I don't have the money right now. After 8600 miles I am finally realizing that I should have bought the Firebolt rather than the Lightning. I just didn't like the look of the half nose faring at the time. Oh well it is only money. I will run this one for a while and likely go back to the stock windscreen before I save for the Firebolt pieces. |

Wonder if the windscreen's backplate/mounting frame from the Uly will fit on the XB9S? I too am looking for better wind protection. Someone could make just the plexi-glass extension and have it bolt to the current windscreen using the stock four bolts. |

Just FYI: Zero Gravity has a couple of "fairings" for the XBSs listed on their website... Unfortunately, they are TBA for release, and no photos yet. I'm waiting for more info from them... Cool work on the custom, though. My only concern would be sheetmetal construction... -Mike (Message edited by rarebird on August 28, 2005) |

I've been waiting for those Zero Gravity "fairings" for the XBS since early spring. I don't think that they're too eager to get those done. I've even emailed them twice about a possible release date and got no response. |

Danbury CT, HD-Buell offered to try to fit a Uly screen (just the clear part) on my 04 12XBs to save me from spending $450 for that beautiful but expensive German JP Graphics fairing. Looks like four bolts and some thick washers might work. I'm thinking about it, seems possible and a nice solution. But I like Cdrimer's approach of just making it himself. Nice job. |

I was hoping to put a body like this one on it someday. But I will have to wait. I like how they used what looks like the Lightning headlamp assembly on this one. I really like the look of the JP Graphics windscreen, but couldn't spend that much for it. |

after a several 400-500 mile Long-Way-Home-After-Work rides, and a couple 1000-mile-day rides on the XB (lightning), i have to wonder what is the attraction to these big barn-door windscreens? Does the wind bother you, or is rain a factor? I find that a full face helmet, and a rainsuit works well. also find an electric-heated vest to be an essential for all night rides. anyway, an interesting solution you have, maybe try some plastic or acrylic sheet. i hope you dont cut yourself on that sheet metal. |

I haven't really noticed a difference in the amount of wind on my chest. When I ride in the summer, I wear an open face helmet and the wind tries to fly off the back of my head. I couldn't really tell a if the windscreen made a difference. I am going back to the stock one for now. On another note Fullpower, I was looking back at your chain drive conversion. I have found the front and rear sprockets you mentioned, but am unsure of the idler sprocket you changed to. Any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Since I have the weaker 03 belt, I am looking at the chain since it cost less than (or around the same) and the 04 belt conversion then I can fine tune the gearing for after the planned engine mods. |

Put some plexaglass from the local hardware store and put it in the oven at a low temp till it softens up and then form it around the metal shield you have now. |

bcordb3, this is perfect, did you go to a local glass shop to make that plexiglass screen? you read my mind. |

Sleeper, I actually bought the fly screen from the Royal Enfield website. It is a replica of the 1957 version. http://www.enfieldmotorcycles.com/index.html |

Cee Bailey just came out with a pretty nice-looking shield for XB9 and XB12. Check it out at http://www.ceebaileys.com/buell/lightningxb9_xb12.html |
