Good morning, Could someone do a little test for me? If you walk up to your Uly from the left side, put your right hand on the rear wheel and rock it back in forth, does it have any play side to side? Mine does and my gut says that is bad. 08 with 15K. |

You should feel no play in a left to right wiggle test of the rear wheel. |

Yes, that's bad, but you likely caught it before it got much worse. You probably just need to replace your rear wheel bearings. Much better to discover something like this in your driveway than to have a catastrophic bearing failure ~100 miles from home. |

This is very dangerous but you MUST HAVE felt some sort of problem while riding the bike before this. |

Actually, I just had the rear tire replaced, and have only taken it for a quick 12-15 mile ride. The play is very limited, (not that any play is good) and with the addition of new tires is hard to discern. I noticed it when I was moving the bike around the garage, and of course it made me nervous so I haven't been on it again. |

If I were you, I'd take the following steps: Visually inspect the bearings. When these things go, it tends to be visible. Re-check the torque on the wheel. Since you just had the tire changed, it may not be properly torqued. Did you put the wheel back on? Did a Buell tech? Did a Harley tech? Did a monkey? (Sorry, I repeat myself.) If properly torqued and you still get the wiggle, remove the wheel and check the bearings by turning them with your fingers. If the bearings are shot, you'll know. Check the spacer. If the wheel was over torqued, the spacer could be crushed, which may be causing the wiggle. |

Is there a good write-up on how to change the wheel bearing yourself? Is there a preferred bearing puller? Mine needs changing too, as I can feel quite a bit of wiggle. I've been messing with my suspension setup lately thinking it was to blame for the loose feeling when I enter into a turn but the bad wheel bearing would explain the feeling better. |

I took my wheel into a bike shop with new bearings and I think they charged me 30 bucks to swap them. There's a bunch of DYI stuff on this site, but for 30 bucks, I didn't want to spend the time. |

Lots of info on rear wheel bearings in this thread (accessed via the "new owners" link at the top of the BB&D forum): http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/442488.html?1319370720 |

make sure it's not the swing arm pivot mounts either. If these were loose, it might give you the same result. |

check with your local auto zone. They "loan-a-tool" a set of blind bearing pullers that fit a Uly hub perfectly and make short work of the entire process. put new bearings in the freezer for at least a day and heat gun the hub to get it good and loose when it comes time to drop in the new bearings. They will plink right in. I'm on a small tablet trying to type this and it ain't going so well or I'd be more descriptive. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142838/665204.html (Message edited by 7873jake on April 16, 2012) |

They'll go in anyway without all that fridge business. |

So, finally removed the rear wheel, feels like the caliper side bearing is toast. I'm in Madison WI, anyone around here replace rear bearings, where did you go? |

You should be able to get a set of bearings from your local HD/Buell dealer or get them online. There's a thread about compatible bearings. I took my wheel into a local bike shop and they replaced them for $35. |

Update: Called the local HD dealer, (Capital City Harley/Buell), yesterday and to my surprise they had the bearings in stock. I dropped off the wheel last night and they actually pulled the old ones and installed the new ones while I waited. Total cost was $80.00, parts and labor. |
