My 2010 Uly with just over 34K on the clock let me down yesterday on the way into work. Cool morning, very humid with a light fog/rain, moderate traffic but a bunch of stop and go through a series of lights, pulling away from one I got a momentary hesitation/stutter, almost like a misfire, so I kept riding. A few minutes and lights later, it happened again, but a bit worse, so I moved over to the right lane in case I needed to stop. Came into some heavier stop-and-go traffic through a construction zone, and noticed the bike wasn't idling smoothly when stopped. A few minutes later the traffic started to move just as the bike sputtered and died. On the shoulder, tried a few times to restart, no luck. Full shutdown, key off, wait a few and try again, no luck. Pushed the bike up into a nearby gas station, added about a gallon of fuel despite being only 95 miles into the tank and not having a fuel light on, no change. In a parking spot now, riding gear off, doing what basic troubleshooting I could with no real tools on hand, I found: - fuses all fine - relays seem fine (no blue smoke smell or scorching) - ECU physically looks OK, though the plastic/rubber standoff at the front of it is a bit worn from the seat. - all accessible wiring is intact, connections are clean & secure. - key on, killswitch on run, the dash goes through the normal cycle with the engine light on for a few seconds and the oil light on solid, (at least) one of the under-seat relays clicks, but I don't hear the fuel pump running. At this point, figuring there's nothing more I can do roadside, I called AMA for a tow. What with it being rush hour in a construction zone, it took about 90 minutes for them to arrive, and another 30 or so to get back home, by which point the bike had cooled off quite a bit. Before rushing back into work I flipped the key back to on and this time did hear the fuel pump cycle. Not *quite* stupid enough to risk it, I took a different bike for the second trip in to work. Based on the symptoms and roadside testing, I'm thinking the fuel pump is going bad, failing when hot, but I've no idea how to go about confirming that. Any ideas? I'd rather not drop $350 on a fuel pump only to find out that isn't the problem. Are there other relatively common problems on these with similar symptoms? Any leads on a fuel pump for a 2010 XB12X? I'm led to believe it is a different pump than the older models used, but a lot of times the 2008-9 parts are the same and listings just haven't been updated so I'm not sure. I can't find anyone that claims to sell a fuel pump for a 2010 XB in any case. Thanks, |

Excellent write-up of your symptoms. I wonder if your intake seals (at each cylinder) are shot? Or maybe the seal between the airbox and the throttle body. Simple way to check them is either spraying water over them or propane or mapp gas (not lit) over them. When idling, if the engine stalls, then you have bad intake seals. Intake seals on HD engines are considered "maintenance". |
