Jusy bought a sportster timing cover to replace the stock one with rivets to check the cps. My question is what size drill bit do I use to drill the rivets out. Also, how do I keep the metal shavings from drilling out of my motor while drilling it? |

Instead of using POP RIVETS, use PN 2662W HARLEY-DAVIDSON SELF TAPPING SCREWS !!! |

When I did mine, I drilled off the rivet heads only, then removed the cover. Put the inner cover on the bench and drove the rest of the rivet out w/a punch. On re-assembly, I tapped the rivet holes w/a 10/24 (IIRC) tap, and put in stainless socket head screws. Have to be very careful, as the inner cover is only thick enough for 2 or so threads, but I found that to be enough, as the screws only hold on the outer cover. Hope this helps, Dave |

Isn't the plate behind it already threaded? I'm thinking if you turn the cover 90 degrees the holes will line up the the tapped ones. Or did I tap those out? Heck it's been so long I can't remember. Buellistic, speaking of tapping holes, what is the process for replacing the lifter keeper holes, just below the push rod covers? I'm back into mine and thought I'd do that this time around. |

So, will the screws Buellistic refers to below work on the backing plate w/no other mods? I have a new timer cover and see that the pop rivets will not work. Buellistic Posted on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 - 04:14 pm: Instead of using POP RIVETS, use PN 2662W HARLEY-DAVIDSON SELF TAPPING SCREWS !!! |
