looking for advice, I replied on a thread under the Chassis / Suspension area, but wanted to include my question here as well in case any Uly riders don't follow that regularly. To make a short story long ... I was curious if anyone has experience (good or bad) with using the Seal Mate tool on a slowly leaking Buell fork? Mine started weeping about a week ago (3-4 drops/day). I tried the Seal Mate tool last week and it seemed like it worked although I have doubts that I used it 100% correct since the tip of the tool was a little bent when I pulled it back out. It does seem to be weeping less now (~1-2 drops/day) but it did not stop. I'm going to try again tonight but just wondering if people had luck with this on one of our fork seals and if there is an extra recommendation for usage that I missed? Also, how much fluid can come out before this is a concern? Should I already be worried going on a week+ with a few drops/day? Is she still rideable or do I need to leave her parked until I get this resolved? Thanks |

The problem is that it could get worse fast. And if it's on the right side, you need to ask how many drops of oil on the brake disc you are willing to tolerate. |

Thanks Ski. I appreciate the reply. Luckily my issue is with the left so minimal effect on the brake. I definitely don't want a failure regardless though so I need to put some effort into getting this worked out. Thanks again. |

They're really not that hard to replace. I had the same situation about a year ago and was pretty much resigned to taking it in but the boys and girls here convinced me to do it myself. It's only a couple of hours work and you learn a ton. My ADV report here: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70 4808 |

I really appreciate the link. I hadn't started my true search for seal replacement instructions yet but you saved me the trouble ... thanks a lot. I'll check with Al tomorrow on parts. |

Sure, and here's some more: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/631716.html You'll notice other links in there but in general this should cover you. If you don't have the shop manual I highly advise it, it's the best 75 bucks you'll ever spend, and probably cheaper now. |

Thanks again, that is great information. I do have the shop manual in paper and electronic, but I appreciate the advice on that as well. I wanted to make sure I had easy access to it anywhere. I got a good deal on a used copy of the paper version last year as well as a few other maintenance items from one of our brothers getting out of the game. |

Where did you find the electronic version? Dennis |

I'm still looking around for my original purchase receipt ... I keep everything electronic ... somewhere. That was actually the very first purchase I made after getting the bike so it was ~1 year ago. I'll attach a picture of the cover page as well as a digital watermark that might help locate it.
In the meantime I did find two links that look like they might be the same thing. I might have ordered mine from one of these places, but I'll send an update once I track that info down. Well, 36 hours with no more drops after using the Seal Mate tool for the second time. Is it possible to add a little bit of fluid back without completely disassembling the fork? In regards to a seal replacement, has anybody used the Traxxion Dynamics fork spring compressor kit? |

I bought the FKTK-I (Cartridge Fork Tool Kit). It works well, but the compressor really needs an extra person to help. Dennis |

Thanks for letting me know. That kit does not not come with a seal driver does it? I see that both Traxxion & A.S.B. sell ones but they're not cheap. I think I've read other posts indicating that people figured out something else, but I guess I'm not sure if it is worth it to buy or not. On another topic, I lived not too far from your neck of woods for about 5 years a while back. I miss the food and the people and ironically both our kids are Texan's. We actually lived in Carrollton but I took some classes over at UT Arlington ... fantastic winter riding there, no worries about grip heaters or getting the engine up to temp on a short ride. I always wished I could've gotten further south to do some riding. |

I'm gonna be doing this very soon on my 09 Uly and a neighbor's 05 XB12R. I have made/built all the fork tools except seal drivers. Guess I'll get my calipers and take a trip to Lowes... Nice story Ski... All the parts are pretty easy to make - I'll post pix and limited instructions if interested.. Zack |

I have not changed the seals on my forks. I did upgrade my 06 Uly to the newer progressive springs. I might consider getting the Motion Pro driver ($35 online) if I do change the fork seals. I figure that buying the tools still saves money over having the dealer do the service. On your second topic, I rode down to Long Horn Harley/Buell to get some parts on Thursday. The temp dropped 15+ degrees on the way home with wind gusting to over 35 and it was COLD. I had my summer mesh jacket and gloves on. I had to stop and put the liner in and use the heated grips to keep circulation in my hands. |

I think the seal driver and the seal saver are worth it,and the seal driver along with the seal spacer drive the guide bushing in very smartly |
