I finally discovered where the box of rocks was in the engine and why my clutch needed regular adjustments. Turns out that the throwout bearing (aka pressure plate assembly) gave up the ghost and bits of it have been shot-peening the case. Now for the question, has anyone disassembled the clutch without using any of the fancy-shmancy HD tools (Clutch Spring Forcing Screw HD-38515-91 and Spring Compressing Tool HD-38515-A)? I can't find them and don't want to spend the money on a tool I should have to use once every 10k mi. |

You do not need to have any special tools other than a snap ring pliers to remove the throwout bearing. If you have to remove the clutch housing bearing all you would need to do is take the clutch off the engine and pull the bearing from the rear. If you absolutly have to disassemble the clutch and remove the Large snap ring holding the clutch together you should do the friction zone improvement modification. Clutch compressor tools can be fabricated from a 1/4 coupling nut and threaded rod, a PVC coupling of the correct diameter and a piece of 2X4. All you have to do is cut a window in the PVC and drill a hole in the center of the 2X4 and you have yourself a clutch compresor! |

Do a search in the Thumper KV for a pvc clutch compressor - it should come up, it has for me in the past. EZ |

Thanks guys. Swampy your were absolutely right. There was no need to use anything other than a set of snap-ring pliers. The job was a breeze*, especially now that I've learned to buy new gaskets and snap-rings before starting any job. *Actually I had a bit of trouble removing the outer race of the bearing from the release plate, thankfully I possess a mallet and a bunch of over-size sockets. If anyone has questions down the road regarding this job feel free to contact me directly. |
