Hi all, I am looking for any tips on repacking a straight through muffler. I have a Burns Stainless. My neighbor works on house fireplaces and chimneys. He hooked me up with some ceramic wool and stainless steel wire. I'm sure these materials can handle the heat and will hopefully last longer than the purpose made stuff that is in there now. Just looking for your feed back and comments if you have any knowledge or experience with repacking your muffler. |

Silent sport packing. Bristol core is supposed to work well also, but I haven't used it myself. |

Burns sells some stuff called "scrubble", which is stainless steel wool, apparently. So the stuff you use, Albert. How long does it last between repacks? |

I think the EBR race exhaust also uses stainless steel wool. I've not repacked mine in a couple of seasons. |

cravacor i've never had to repack any of my stuff yet, at work some race car mufflers have come back after one endurance race where the wool has melted into glass beads, there is a higher temp rated wool too but extreme circumstances this'll turn to glass as well but we're talking ferrari 430 gt3 etc masses of heat with the muffler skins burnt too so for bikes the wool lasts incredibly well and being single strand is less prone to vibrating out the tail pipe |

I didn't repack it myself last time it was packed, so I cannot vouch for how well the job was done. Going to try to get it done this afternoon... |

Here are some pics of inside the muffler. Not much left of the old packing. The ceramic insulation that my buddy gave me is way to friable to use. I have the packing from a Yoshimura can that looks like it is up to the job. Also, the welds holding the perforated inner tube came loose so I will need to have those repaired.

Weld all the way around it. Micron pipes suffer the same fate, the perforated cores break away.

Thanks for the advice and pics, Dean. Your mufflers are SWEET! Is that the Silent Sport packing in your pic? |

The white packing under the table, yes. That micron got both the stainless wool wrap and silent sport packing around that. |
