You will have to turn the engine over to line up the pinion timing mark to line up the cam timing marks ... |

The part number for the fuel filter won't do you any good. The part is no longer carried by the Harley Parts Network. Take it off and take it to a good car parts store. Any in line fuel filter for a pressurized system will work if the fuel line is the same size. |

"ADJUSTABLE PUSH RODS ARE TOO "HEAVY" to ever put in my engine or any engine that "i" would ever build ... " You could always switch to solid lifters to offset the weight :-) jeff |

Why bother? Adjustable pushrods are just something else to vibrate out of adjustment. I had adjustables in my old Evo FLHP...for about 2 oil changes. Pulled the damn things back out, what a pain in the ass. Loctite, proper torque, everything. Hated 'em. |

I used a screwdriver to gently push cams back into the case and never had to take the rocker boxes off when I pulled the cam cover to cut it down. Aren't there are retainers holding the lifters in place? Mine didn't try to drop out on the one cam I pulled by mistake. 'Course if you don't pull the cams out the lifters won't go anywhere. might bleed down a bit though, just expect it to rattle some when you start it until the lifters fill back up with oil. If you pull the cams you just need to use the alignment marks to set again properly, so don't do it. Am I oversimplifying it? My bike has been fine, I let the whole project freak me out and in the end wondered why I got anxious about it. It's pretty easy to do it right. |

When you removed the cover, you removed the outer support for the cams. When you remove the outer support for the cams, they are pushed down and crooked by the weight of the valvesprings, lifters, and pushrods. You have now dented the bushings that the cams ride in, by "twisting" the cam in them. Removing the rocker arms is the ONLY way to do it right. Period. You can shortcut it, sure...but that doesn't make it "right". And the only thing interfering with lifter drop-out is the anti-rotation screws. Sometimes they interfere enough to keep the lifter from falling out; sometimes it can squeak by and fall out if you remove the cams. |

I agree. Removing the valve spring tension from the cams before pulling half of their support off is the way to keep them from deforming their bushings. Removing the push rods and lifters is not necessary. |

Jcs64: One can buy solid push rods to any length required and LIGHTER than the OEM ones !!! One can PRODUCT IMPROVE OEM lifters to make them lighter and LIGHTER (HYD.) ones can be bought !!! RatBUELL: "RIGHT ON !!!" (Message edited by buellistic on December 12, 2011) |

Sort of related... does the gear case cover need to come off to replace the oil pump drive gear? |

Yes. |

So what I have to do is relieve tension by loosening the valve springs then correct? |

Yes, but the method is to remove the rocker boxes. When I did mine, I took off one rocker box, found out I had the 2 piece paper gaskets, so removed them both. Put each cyl on TDC when removing the rocker boxes. If you haven't already done so, get a factory service manual. A necessity. |

Yes. One by one you set the cylinders to TDC and remove the rocker arm assemblies. Your case has already been off by a half inch, so the important thing now is to relieve that valve spring pressure on whichever rocker arm is down. The cams are already out of their outer bushings. I still say don't take them out; any dents in the bushing will be small. |

Ox1BUELL: Have a son-in-law that is FAA certified to work on airplanes did this same thing ... He did not have a FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL or would not ask me how to do this ... He thought he was working on a car engine and had no idea the can cover also supported one side of the cams ... "i" AM NOW LEARY OF FLYING !!! |

That's about the right price, used might cost you less but won't be there for you now. Seems like mine cost more than that a few year ago, new from the dealer, but it's been a while. I apologize for my bad info, and thank those who replied... don't do it my way |

I would say it is easier to take of the rocker boxes first. But I have to wonder, if pulling the cam cover, without pulling the boxes first, allows the cams to actually drop far enough to create dents in the bushings, how the heck would you ever get the cam cover back on? |

Well, even if I did it the wrong way, I was able to just wipe a little oil on the bushings and carefully slide the cam cover back on, with maybe a little wiggle for hardware alignment, but I recall it went back together well, easy. Course when I start hearing a racket in the cam chest I'll know it may be due to irregular wear on the bushings because of the stress I put on them a few years ago. |

well i bought the manual and it is on the way, i have decided to do this myself ,because i need to learn how to do this and if i have any doubts i can always ask the good guys here, i ordered a brand new unopened service manual, and thank you for the offer i will call you if i have problems or just for the hell of it. as of now the bike is on its way down to the frame,, i cant wait tto see the finished product, i am not going crazy with re painting things just a few pieces and fixing some unexpected broken wires and such as i go. |

If you get a chance, pick up a parts manual also. The exploded illustrations are invaluable, and it doesn't hurt to have part numbers when you're looking for parts, too. Part of owning the bike is knowing it inside and out. They're really quite simple machines. |
