On my ride home from work last night, I was tooling at around 70 mph / 3k rpm ish...it sounded more noisy than usual (valve noise). SOMETHING gave up the ghost and I had instant loss of power. Was able to limp it from the fast lane across three lanes of traffic and onto the shoulder where it finally died. Restart was uneventful and I heard a loud knock. I'm not sure if it threw a rod or if the oil pump failed and I lost the lifters. I guess when I can find a spot to tear into it, I'm stuck. I think the heads are going to have to come off to check the valves (see if they got bent) and make sure the piston is ok. As far as the bottom end, time will tell. Maybe it might have to become a parts bike...any takers? ughhh |

More than likely it's a broken valve. But i have been wrong before. Sounds like a bent valve and running on 1 cylinder. |

Aw man!, your new ride. Sorry to hear about this. Glad you were able to get out of traffic. I think you can you remove exhaust header and intake and peek in at the back of the valves. I would think this would give an initial idea if its valve damage. |

Thanks Jim. I'm going to pull plugs first and turn it over (by hand to see/hear) if something is not kosher with the valves. Good Idea about the header. I might also try to crank it over and see if I get output from the pump...that would be a tell tale sign if the oil pump took a poop. If that was the case, maybe...just maybe it caused the lifters to collapse and keep the valves closed. ughhh...she was running really well too... |

Pretty easy to drop the oil pump. And being a tuber, that might be where your problem is anyway (pinion gear). Or at least where it started before all the really expensive noises began. |

Decided to do a leak down test over lunch...bottom end sounded ok, but leak down test proved that the valves are toast. Out of funds, so look for a parts bike on C-list. |

Offer it up whole first. Might be able to keep one alive after all... |

I'm sorry for venting and I'm pulling up my big boy pants now. Just frustrated. Only way to find out what's broke is to tear into it. Estimate cost and be frugal. If she needs to be whole and running...I want it to be mine. Thanks for talking me off the ledge Jim...beers on me. |

Breath, breath. The sky might not be falling just yet. Good luck with the tear down and have fun. Hope it's nothing to bad. Keep us posted, I'm really curious what cut loose. |

Well if you just "want it to run", and it damaged a valve...Sportster heads are about a dime a dozen out there and while you may lose a little performance, it'll get you back up and running on a budget. Lifters are pretty cheap, too. Most stock pieces are, actually...it's when you get into the performance stuff that the $ starts to add up. Good luck, and keep us posted! |

Eric, Bummer! After a year of mine being down I can empathize. I just replaced a front head. I cracked the boss when the front mount let go so it's not really usable as is, but could be welded I hear. It's your's for the cost of shipping if any of the parts work for you. It is from an 01 X1. I also have the stock pistons, cylinders, and piston pins. Same deal on the lot if it can help get you back on the road. Good luck and don't part it if you can avoid it! Matt |

My M2 shredded the pump drive the day I bought it riding it home. Fortunately it was just at sunset so I immediately saw the light come on, pulled the clutch & hit the kill switch. As others have said, if you're staying stock it won't cost too much to fix, plus when you're done you'll be sure of it. Best of luck. |

Leak down test was bad on one cylinder or both? If it's the rear, you have lots of options from the world of Sportsters. If it's the front and your studs are good, you may be able to transfer parts from Matt's generous offer. You have a fine motorcycle with a fixable issue, and friends who will help you make it fit your budget. Despair not! |
