I converted my S3 to run a 55w HID bulb. MUCH better. Not a great pattern, but at least I can see more then 2.4 feet in front of me at night, now. I saw an S3 and homecoming that used 2 rectangular fog lights stacked on top of one another in the headlight spot on the fairing, I'm assuming one was aimed for high beam and one for low. Something to consider, possibly. |

S3 uses a square headlight. Original was plastic housing and lense with regular bulb. I replaced the plastic unit with a glass unit from a Kawa atv which uses a halogen bulb. Better but still nowhere near the L.E.D. lights! That link the HID H4 bulb shown is round. |

I changed my S2 over to a "euro-spec" light pattern with a replaceable H4 bulb. autoanything.com has them listed, I got a Hella. They're a standard automotive 2-light headlight (as opposed to a 4-light system), just make sure to get the right size for the fairing. The euro lights throw a MUCH better beam, even with a standard bulb. |

What all was involved changing over? Any electrical changes? Heat issues? I have not had any exposure to HID. |

The biggest thing in an HID conversion is coming up with places to hide the additional pieces, ballast, relay, additional leads, etc. Once the the lamp is lit, it puts out MORE light while using much less amps. HID lamps have no filaments, but do get warmer than incadesance. I've had one in my S3 lamp for years with no problems. |

I didn't think HIDs ran hotter - if anything, I thought they were cooler. No real electrical system changes are needed, only additions. You have the new bulb, which is accompanied by an ignitor and a ballast - sometimes these are in the same box, sometimes not, just depends on the kit. generally the ignitor needs to run straight off the battery, but there are relays and things to prevent contstant drain. I'm an electrical systems zero and mine went in fine. |

On those HID kits you guys installed, how do you handle high beam/low beam? How is the light pattern? They actually check that stuff in my state's inspection. |

You keep the stock parts in a box for inspection day? I've seen one vacuum advance distributor pass smog cert in California on six VWs. |
