Hey everyone Im in the last stages of starting my bike for the first time after crashing it. I managed to gt a signal when I have my battery hooked up but as soon as i turn the key switch i pop the 15A fuse that is attached to the key switch . I checked all my grounds and they seem t be fine. I also tryed a bigger fuse and it popped as well any idea what i have to do to fix this. This is all i need to finally start my bike and winterize it so cud use the help asap. |

Something to try: Turn the key switch off, and turn the Stop/Run to Stop. Put in a new fuse. Turn the key switch on. Does the fuse pop? If not, you should have turn signals, lights ect. If it does fail, you have a short to ground somewhere in the accessory circuit. If the fuse didn't pop, now turn the Stop/Run switch to Run. If the fuse immediately fails, try unplugging the speed sensor, and try again. If the fuse doesn't fail, the speed sensor is shorted to ground, probably internally. |

In that last sentence, you meant to say "if the fuse fails", yes? |

Ah, no, actually. Switch to Run, fuse fails. Replace fuse, turn Run switch to Stop, unplug speed sensor. Leaving speed sensor unplugged, turn key on, Stop/Run switch to run, fuse doesn't fail. Therefore, speed sensor is shorted internally. If I understand what I thought you asked, LOL. Dave |

Oops, I missed the part about the sensor. Upon rereading it make perfect sense now. |

I had that problem, it turned out it was loose battery connections even though I thought they were tight. I snugged them up (which they needed) and havent had that problem since. |

I had that problem years ago..as you have sumised...it is the speed sensor. Get th latest revision, all should be good. |

It's OK; you/we now know more than before. It is time to start checking the ACC side of the harness, looking for a short to ground. The accident has possibly chaffed or pinched a 'hot' wire somewhere between the IGN switch and whatever (lights, brake switch, ect.) appliance that wire serves. As mentioned before, the steering stem and headlight stuff would be a good place to start. |

A suggestion: Take one of your blown fuses and jam wires into the contacts and connect these wires to a headlight bulb. Headlight bulbs take 5A when the filament is lit up but before it heats up, it's pretty much a short. You can turn on the circuit and wiggle wires without blowing $75 worth of fuses that way. |

Firstly, multi-meters are cheap... definitely cheaper than fuses after a while, so pick up one and start shooting your wiring properly, looking for anything going to ground that shouldn't be. Accessory power wiring is red/orange, and your power from ignition switch is grey. Past that I'd have to refer to the service manual electrical schematic. |

try with all new relays. I had a bad relay that caused the fused to blow at start up. If you put the battery in with the opposite polarity, it will kill the relays. I had that happen when I mistakenly placed the wrong battery from my 1125 bike, which has opposite polarity from XB |

Well, what your describing sounds like the problem I had with the fuel pump wires chaffing. Theres a connector on the right side, near the steering head, that you can disconnect, its the fuel pump harness, disconnect it, then try again. |

I found out when i unplugged the side cover on my buell the fuse does not blow there for its either the side cover the throttle position sensor or the race ecm how do i test those three things out and also if it was the relays is there a way for me to test them without buying all new relays |

Which side cover are you referring to? Can you take a picture of what you unplugged? |
