Does anyone make (or can make) a bracket to mount the OEM Nissin calliper on the left? After improving the handling of my beloved X1 with the replacement of works shock I now find myself riding far more smoothly and quickly, necessitating considerably more use of the front brake than was previously the case. I like the idea of a dual front brakes and I’ve seen pictures of dual brake set ups on various tube framed Buells and most of them seem to involve an expensive replacement of all of the existing hardware. I quite like the idea of adding to what’s already there in an attempt to maintain the original look of the bike by using a right OEM rotor reversed on the left side and OEM Nissin calliper (these seem to be readily available on eBay). I’ve seen on the ‘X1 Files’ website that there was a guy ‘Cap’ that in the past made a mounting bracket to retro fit an additional right styled OEM Nissin calliper on the left. I am really interested in seeing if I can get such a bracket made up. The X1 files information is quoted below: "Cap can build the bracket for the Nissin so you can run dual discs cheaply. You will have to run a Buell rotor reversed on the left side. He can also do a mirror image of the rotor carrier to make it look right but that drives the cost up. With dual 6 piston Nissin calipers you will need a 9/16 bore MC and a dual disc hose. This method is the cheapest way but will still cost in the $500-600 range with all the parts needed. If interested in a dual disc setup, give Cap a call at 865-546-3380 or email him and he will point out all of the options and costs." I know that this info is quite old and the email is out of date, being overseas I haven’t tried the phone number and would assume it too is out of date. Trojan Horse once made something similar but now no longer sell their dual brake set up for the tube framed models. This unfortunate as it’s exactly what I’m after! So I would appreciate anyone info on how to obtain/get made a calliper bracket for the LHS. Conversely I really like the standard rear brake set up and the associated pressure required to apply the rear brake. Cheers |

There is this expensive option: http://www.freespirits.it/prodotti.php?lang=2&cat_ id=377&prod_id=69 I don't think you can just flip the RH caliper over to use on the LH side for a few reasons. There was this kit though, I think it was Buell Racing stuff (good luck finding one, ). Notice the fittings for the lines face outboard.

You could also research which Jap bike has usable forks and wheel, and do a swap-out. It has been done before, but I don't know which bike the parts came from. |

A swap over to a supersport front end from a jap/italian bike will most likely be more functional than converting the Buell to a dual disc/single sided set up. I don't have quantifiable numbers, but if it were mine, I'd either do the supersport conversion or source an XB wheel, 8 pot caliper and the appropriate master. Either one will be a fairly large improvement over your current braking. Unfortunately, there aren't any really inexpensive options for you, unless you want to try scrubbing your disc with a 3M pad, swapping in some new HH pads and changing out your brake fluid. |

If I'm not mistaken the Suzuki front end was the easiest to swap over per a comment from Fireman Jim on similar post. The wheel looked similar to a Buell unit as well |

I’ve found the picture that got me thinking about a twin disc set up. It’s Dutch_X1’s ‘before photo’ prior to him completely changing the front end of his bike to an XB set up. The photos are in the current cool pic forum. His old twin disc setup shows an OEM rotor on the left mated to a twin piston caliper via a mounting bracket. The brake line then goes up an over the front guard and I’m assuming its been connected to the right caliper. I couldn’t find any other photos of Dutch’s X1 to see if he used a twin piston caliper on the right or kept the original 3 piston one. It’s also not clear in the photo if a different master cylinder was used. I’ve sent him a PM and asked him some questions so I’ll wait and see what comes back.

That looks like a set of PM calipers. Have a trusted machine shop fab up an adapter for a metric pattern left Nissin caliper. It's a 5/8" bore master that'll be needed for that set up. |

Rick I saw your post re ‘10 years with the S1’ and your comments about converting to a dual disc set up. This is the other thread/photos that really got me thinking about it all. It sounds like you did a similar conversion to what appeared on the X1-Files website. I know you did all this six years ago but do you remember the type of Nissin caliper you used or the specific bike that you sourced it from as I’m now starting to look around for a suitable caliper along with a Buell front rotor. Finally…………. I’ve seen the photo of your bike from the left and can make out the bracket but a close up photo of your mounting bracket/caliper set up would be of a huge help. |

This adapter was probably one of the last to come out of Buells's old race dept. and were made by Mr. Duga himself (I got the last of the tuber rearsets as well). These calipers only come in two bolt patterns for left side applications, Ducati (narrow, similar to the PM set-up on Dutch’s X1) or Japanese (Suzuki and Kawasaki used these, which is also the bolt pattern used on all the Buell left side Nissin adapters I've seen). My caliper came new from Parts Unlimited. I don't trust second hand stuff for brakes or electronics.

Thanks Rick I've seen a few new Buell rotors on eBay for ok $'s and it shouldn't be too hard to find a suitable 19mm, 5/8 master cylinder or the 90mm Nissin left side calliper. So the challenge is to get the adaptor made up. If this can be done then it’s a cheaper upgrade than the twin disc kits that are still available. Has any ever made an adaptor or a copy of the Buell racing adaptor as pictured in Brinnutz and Rick_a’s posts? |

Guys, I know I'm a little late to the party buuuut, I have the race kit that is pictured and I'm trying to mount it on my M2. If it doesn't work out. The entire kit will be for sale. |
