The big hog harleys have three oil reservoirs. The Buells and Sportsters have two, engine and transmission/primary chaincase. Engine oil capacity is 2.5 quarts. The transmission/primary capacity is one quart, but when you replace the oil only put in about 28 ounces as some oil remains in the transmission. Overfilling even just a little will cause the clutch to stick and make for hard shifting.

There's a service manual online here in the Knowledge Vault that shows capacities and how to check for proper oil level. It is for the 1996/1997 S1, but still applies to all tube frame bikes for lubrication.

When you check the engine oil, do it immediately upon warm engine shutdown, and with the bike on level pavement and balanced upright, not on the side-stand.
