Just bought an '09 Uly; 5K miles, outdoorsman luggage and comfort kit. Very nice. One thing I did notice, though, was the heat. While I owned an '06 Uly I always wondered why so many people complained about the thigh-roasting heat, but with my 'new' '09 I definitely understand. I don't recall ever feeling so hot on my '06. I find that especially curious, given that my '06 was stock and the '09 has the comfort kit installed. The previous owner says he did not have the reflash done to keep the fan from coming on while in motion, but the fan in fact never did come on until I stopped the bike. Any insight into the heat issue? Would an Erik Buell Racing ECU possibly cause it to run richer and hence a little cooler? Might the side cases be trapping a little extra heat? |

The first question would be "did you have the tall seat on your 06 Uly?". Having an extra ~2" of foam between you and the heat source makes a huge difference. Another point, at 5000 miles, your 09 Uly's not quite broken in yet; heat may get better with more miles. The problem on a lot of Ulys with the Comfort Kit is that the right side scoop tends to force hot air out of the gap between the bottom of the seat and the top of the right side frame rail. Once the fan comes on, it pulls the air downward and the problem lessens or goes away. Even if you don't get the ECM update which changes the fan logic, you can do things to stop the hot air from coming out there. Two approaches which work are to seal off the openings in the frame above the rear cylinder head with adhesive-backed aluminum HVAC tape (this forces all air to exit through the fan opening) or install a piece of automotive weather stripping on top of the right side frame rail which prevents the hot air from existing at this gap and blowing against your inner right thigh. I'm also curious to know if the Erik Buell Racing ECM helps. Supposedly, the 08-up bikes have even leaner fueling than the 06/07's, so it seems that race ECM might help. |

I started with the tall seat on the '06 but after a year or so went to the lower seat. I don't think the seat height is the issue for me, since it's not really my tail that's getting roasted, but rather my right thigh. I kinda wish the fan would come on, as that might alleviate the problem, as you suggested. The HVAC tape sounds like a good idea. I'll probably do the Erik Buell Racing ECU thing after I consult with Erik Buell Racing, and I'll report the results back here |

Right thigh says the exhaust is HOT and wrapping might be the fix. |

After riding a little more I've realized that the worst of the heat seems to be coming from the gap at the bottom of the seat and the top of the frame. Hmmmm |

Get the oem airflow kit and also seal the gap between the scoop outlet and shock cover |

Thanks. I've got the OEM airflow kit, if you mean the "Comfort Kit". I'll look at what you say about the gap. Actually, after I realized that the heat that was really bothering me was coming through the gap between the bottom edge of the seat and the top edge of the frame rail, I improvised the poor man's fix. I tore off a few inches of black Gorilla tape (essentially heavy duty duct tape) and folded a third of it lengthwise over on itself, so that the folded section was black non-sticky on both sides. Then I used the section that was still sticky to affix it to the bottom edge of the seat, with the non-sticky part protruding below, and when I put the seat back on I just tucked that section of tape in so that it mostly blocked the gap but was not noticeable to the eye. Seems to have made a big improvement! |

Special OPS has a heat shield that fits under the seat, it really works well. I also insulated areas around the right side vent cover. No heat problems at all now. I have an 08 Uly with the comfort kit and I have not changed the fan timing with the reflash. BR |
