I plan on powder coating the headers. How does one pull these bad boys off and about how long to do it?

Get the service manual. Length? Two or three hours the first time around, at least. Like anything else, you get faster once you've done it. |

Getting the headers off isn't to bad. I just replaced my headers, I put ceramic coated ones on. Basically you need to remove the entire back of the bike. Remove the rear shock and you will have access to taking off the fan. Once the fan is removed you can get to the two bolts that hold it in at the top. You will also need to drop the exhaust. I suggest you do that first. Removing the exhaust: 1.Remove the chin fairing by removing the 4 torx screws that hold it in place. Don't loose the white plastic washers. 2.Loosen the rear axle pinch bolt on the underside of the swingarm. 3.Using the rear axle removal tool unscrew the rear axle 20 full turns. This loosens the drive belt tension. 4.Remove the front belt guard by removing the 3 torx screws that hold it in place. Don't loose the white plastic washers. 5.Unscrew the 2 nuts that retain the belt tensioner and pull the tensioner off of its studs. The studs are a close fit on the holes in the tensioner so be sure to pull off in a straight even manner. Don't try to pry it off. If it sticks then push it back on all the way and try again to pull it off straight. 6.Loosen the clamp on the muffler's inlet. 7.Loosen the clamp bolt that holds the header to the muffler. 8.Loosen and remove the three band clamps that hold the muffler to the frame. 9.Work the muffler off of the header by twisting slightly and you are done. |

What gives? I was told that powder coating won't last on the muffler (to hot). I imagine the header will be a lot hotter. |

That is correct, Buellin_ri. Ceramic coating (designed for high temperature applications) will work nicely wherein powder coating will, for lack of a better description, turn into a blotchy mess. Chris |

Yeah...this winter I'll be coating the header and Drummer, and the wheels will be powder coated...should be fun! |

Home for what? Winter? As of right now, I'm coming home for good in three weeks. Got tons of stuff to do to both bikes to get them moving again (the 'bolt more so than the Blast...). You're welcome to drop by anytime, Mookie. |
