I have been lucky. My 08XT (with 32K mile) always ran very very smoothly at low RPMs unlike many that have had issues. While riding out to the Mid Ohio race track 2 weeks ago. I started feeling a hesitation from about 1200 to 2900 RPM. It seemed to idle and run well above 3000 RPM. So last night I decided to do a little tune-up. I pulled the plugs and installed new NGK iridiums. The air filter had the usual dirt and some oil from the engine breather, so I had a new one to be installed.

The throttle valve and intake were nasty. I decided to take apart the IAC and clean as addressed by Sharkguy. I used carb cleaner soaked rags and swabs to clean up the the throttle valve and the intake. The IAC was just as funky as the rest.

Buttoned everything up and I added a few ounces of Redline S1-1 injector cleaner to the gas.

Started her up and the idle was rough and stalled a few times. Held the RPMs for a bit to about 1800 RPM to stabilize things and warm up. The idle returned to normal. Rode the bike and voila, smooth as glass again. The low end response was back.

Thanks to Sharkguy for the nice IAC write-up. I am not sure if the IAC was the problem or a combination of the dirt intake, IAC and old plugs but all is well now.

I have found carbon build up on the edge of the throttle plate to be a problem on earlier XBs when doing a TPS reset. Doing a TPS reset before cleaning the throttle plate can actually make it run worse.

Good to see ya get it fixed at the home shop!
