I was changing my transmission oil this morning. When I took the drain plug off there were lots of metal shavings on the magnet but also something that gave me cause for concern. There was a small metal washer attached to the magnet as well. What the heck is that? I've been riding the bike around and haven't noticed anything wrong with it. Thoughts?

You shouldn't find a metal washer though. |

transmission? you mean primary? I didn't think sportsters had a separate trans. If it's primary I would check the clutch something must have snapped or the stator? |

The amount of metal shavings on the plug looks about normal. As for the washer, I just tore down my Uly engine and primary a couple of months ago and the only think I can think of that may have a washer that small on it is the screws that hold the stator to the crankcase. I can't imagine that one of those screws could have backed out- I think it'd cause some BAD problems plus you'd have found a mangled screw head in that mess. My guess would be somebody at the factory dropped one of those washers in there by accident- unless you've ever changed your stator, in which case it may have happened then. I wouldn't worry about it too much. |

If it's under warranty, you should bring that washer in and ask them to have a look for "the greater good" Put it this way: If you had them change the juice and they found that washer, would they just pop the plug back in and add oil? Perhaps they would. Perhaps they wouldn't. |

Yeah I should have said "primary" oil. My bike has 3100 miles on it so I've never changed a stator, clutch, etc. The primary cover has never been off for any reason. I was simply doing the 2nd engine and primary oil flush on it to change over to AmsOil 20w-50. The first flush I did at 1000 miles using blended Harley oil. Didn't see any washers in the first flush hehe. If I wanted to take the primary cover off to do an inspection, is there anything special I need to do there? Can I simply removed the external shift linkage, drain the fluid, and then take out all the bolts holding the primary cover on? Even if it is a stray washer I'd like to at least eyeball everything in the case at this point. I don't know if the primary cover holds anything in etc. Once I changed fluids today I took the bike for a 50 mile ride. No issues, no weird noises, no bangs, cracks, nothing abnormal sounding. This is weird. (Message edited by cdj0902 on June 19, 2011) |

Never mind, I downloaded the service manual so I see what I need to do to take the cover off now. The question is, for those of you who have been inside the primary, is there even a washer of that size used on any bolt under there? I know there was a comment above stating that they'd not see any washers of that size in there. Just to do my inspection I'd have to order a new primary cover gasket as well as a shift linkage shaft seal. My closest Buell service tech is over 50 miles away. I'd like to hear from some more experienced people here before I go tearing into the primary and cause myself a mess. |

American Sport Bike has the gaskets, can't help much more than that since I've never been in that part of my machine yet. |

I was just inside my primary, and I have no idea where the little washer came from. I used a new cover gasket, but put electrical tape over the splines for the shifter shaft. After the cover was off, I removed the shifter seal from the cover. It looked fine. Put it back together and 300 miles and no leaks. |

Just a thought but that looks like one of the washers for the screws that hold the inspection covers on, did you just drop it by mistake? |

Any chance the drain plug magnet picked up the washers off the garage floor/bench last time the oil was changed and just didn't notice? |

All the inspection cover washers are accounted for. Also, this washer is skinnier than those. So strange... (Message edited by cdj0902 on July 01, 2011) |
