The clutch comes off as an assembly. The manual, as always, is a little confusing, but it does say as a unit. You may need a simple generic puller for the engine sprocket. Sometimes they slide right off, but dont count on it. A less generic tool would be the locking plate to hold everything tight while you undo the engine nut. You can buy or make your own. They come in at least two forms one of which is a plate jammed between the engine and clutch sprockets. Another is a wedge which jams itself between the chain and the sprocket. Someone here recently used a door hinge as the jam/locking plate and I know someone who uses a rag as a wedge. More generic but specialized would be the snap/retaining ring pliers. These you'll use again and again. |

the manual is unclear. could or should i just remove the clutch? is it easier to remove just the front gear? (Message edited by rusty7983 on June 29, 2011) |

It all comes off as a unit. Engine sprocket and clutch and chain. You do not have to disassemble the clutch. If you do want to pull the clutch apart for inspection, I do not know if other tools will work. I think i've seen 2 different kinds for the clutch spring, but...... Wear safety glasses. |

I have found that pneumatic 1/2 '' impact gun really helps with removing the nuts for the clutch and engine sprocket. I personally use just my hands to remove the sprockets. The one on the engine sometimes take a little wiggling to get it off. |

The clutch unit just slides off. If you want to pull it all apart then I would look to see if American Sport Bike has the clutch tool. Part number HD-38515-A and HD-38515-91. It probably fits many Sportster/Buell clutches. I have an older clutch tool and you couldnt substitute anything else for it. I havent had to pull the Blast clutch apart yet, so I couldnt tell you if something else would work. Motion Pro and Jims both make a clutch tool for XLs/Buells. They aint cheap though. If the clutch wasnt slipping and its not really that big of a deal to take the clutch apart (its not like you'd have to pull the front sprocket again), I'd just let it go. Unless you have the money for the right tool and you dont mind spending more precious days of summer working on it. As yet I havent heard of anyone burning out a clutch unless they did something really stupid. We raced with a stock Blast clutch and that included 4000rpm clutch slips and drops. Serious abuse. |

i finally got the clutch and primary chain off. you don't need to pull the engine sprocket. it was a waste of time to remove the nut. i did not remove the front sprocket. the chain was so stretched it was sagging to the gasket area on the bottom. if i could figure out how to do pictures i would upload them. |
