I hate needing reading glasses. I overfilled the oil about 4+ oz. did not realize. Ran bike about 20 miles 1st & second gear 5-7k rpm. then used 3rd at 4k rpm slow in residential area. engine missed a couple times over 1 mile then lost all power and died. Cranked no go smell gas. Trailered bike home sat 12 hours, new plugs (ones removed black sooty) started ran 1 minute died! While waiting for flooded engine to clear check oil again in bright daylight saw was overfilled suctioned out 5oz. still will not start. Airbox had slight signs of oil around bottom of air filter. Velocity stack dry butterfly dry. WHAT NEXT? Change plugs again??? HELP! |

If the sooty plugs you took out during this episode were not oil fouled, chances are the problems you encountered were not due to too much oil in the engine. But, check the air filter for oil contamination, . Check for any kind of blockage (kink or foreign debris) with the rubber tube that is the fuel tank breather. This is one of those insidious anomalies that usually create problems miles down the road due to a build-up of pressure or other situation that can affect the fuel or ignition systems. |

Had half a tank of fresh gasoline. A bit of oil around the velocity stack and area inside the K&N Filter. The fuel tank breather rubber hose is clear and the hard plastic portion on the frame down inside/behind the left foot peg was clear also. The spark plugs I had to use as replacement were new, but had been "rained on" this past winter when my rental house was abandon and a water pipe froze, broke, and went 3 weeks until I learned the renter walked and the pipe froze! The boxes were soaked when I drove to MO from TX to shut off the water since the water Co could not find the meter! I cleaned them up but they had began to corrode. So I hope new spark plugs may help. I ordered some NGK Iradium as replacements. |

New plugs, fresh gasoline, did the bypass on the venting into the air box. Cranks but will not start. I have the ECM Spy software (be it in German) and waiting on the cable. Considering replacing the O2 sensor if the TPS reset fails. |

Pull one of the plugs and, holding it on the engine fins with plug wire on, see if it sparks while cranking. If no sparks, troubleshoot the ignition circuit starting with the ignition, key & starting relays. If still no sparks after swapping relays around or substituting with a good one, check for broken wires in the wire harness or corroded connections around the handlebars, the relay center and the wires leading to the cam position sensor on the right side. |

I was once fooled by a weak spark doing the spark plug against the engine. Was going crazy because I "had spark" when it was barely able to throw a visible spark, but since it did I assumed it was throwing one strong enough. It wasn't. I have no more time this weekend to wrench. Have a spark tester on order it will indicate if there is a strong spark. Will check all you suggested then. Thanks! |

It turned out the overfilled oil had nothing to do with the problem! After getting ECM Spy and a cable I discovered the rear injector had a fault. After a few hours of testing wiring and components, it was down to the Race ECM being suspect. I was lucky enough to locate the stock ECM after 7 years and 2 moves... and plugged it in. ECM Spy indicated no trouble codes, I reset the TPS and the bike started right up! Now I need to locate a replacement Race ECM. I did find then on Erik's new website Erik Buell Racing for $250.00, so unless I can find one cheaper a payday or two and I can get things back to original! Thanks for the feedback! |
