Planning on changing the primary fluid tonight, was wondering if i can see the primary tensioner when im changing the fluid or if i will have to "dig" a little. I know the old "bad" one has thin metal and the replacement is the thicker metal. if someone could help me out on it's location that would be great! Thanks! |

You have to remove the primary cover,its fitted to it. |

i will need to purchase a new gasket for that then correct? because you refill the fluid through the clutch cover? |

you most likely will need a primary cover gasket, yes. Head over to American Sport Bike, and buy the good gsket, as well as a new clutch cover gasket, inspection window gasket and shift shaft seal...that way you'll have them all on hand. |

The metal gaskets can be reused fairly reliably, the paper ones are lucky to work right the first time, much less when reused. So it probably depends on when somebody was in there last... I think the switch to metal gaskets from the dealer was 2004 or so. Too bad they didn't stamp the part of the tensioner that sticks out the bottom of the primary with some kind of "updated" indicator, so you could check it without removing the primary. |

Actually the factory update was in 2000 or 2001. My S3T has the "thicker" version installed during it's manufacture. |

Here is a little PARTS HISTORY ... The SHOE ASM.(primary adjuster) PN 39975-90 was used on the EVO SPORTSTER from day one ... There was NO PROBLEM with this ADJUSTER until the BUELL Models came along ... The PROBLEM REASON was the BUELL Riders rode harder causing the engine to run hotter which caused the engine to expand more ... If the PRIMARY CHAIN was correctly adjusted this PROBLEM would never occur'ed ... Correct adjustment is 3/4 inch loose on the chain tight spot ... The UP-DATED PART NUMBER is 39975-90A ... My 2000 X1 had the old one. I replaced it at 40,000 and it was wobbly but still in one piece It's a wicked easy job. You'll enjoy yourself |

Thanks for the info fellas, i changed the primary fluid yesterday with mobil 1 20w50 and found that "clutch spring" that is pushed up against the clutch cover plate was broken but the good news was the bottom of the spring was outside of the primary. took out the spring and put back together. Im ordering one today and im wondering if it is still safe to drive. thoughts? |

That spring holds your adj.bolt in place....If it comes out and falls(either nut or bolt) it could wind up in your primary chain and become a very expensive ride......Short answer NO |
