okay so I got the battery disconnected, but the manual says remove through the left side of the bike... that's not going to happen. I think I'm just going to remove the tail section to get it out. Suggestions? |

You have to remove the bodywork. Well..."remove" isn't entirely accurate. Remove seat. Remove torx bolts that hold bodywork to subframe (should be 2, under the seat). Remove 1/2" bolt that holds rear of tank so you can lift tank off front of tail section (just lift the rear of the tank a couple inches, don't have to mess with fuel lines or anything). Slide and tilt tail section back and up, out of the way. That way, you don't have to worry about unplugging taillights or turn signals. |

Thanks, but I am eventually going to have the ole S1 completely broken down so not worrying about fuel lines and electrical is just delaying the inevitable for me |

not trying to be a dick, but if you can't take out the battery, how do you plan on disassembling the rest? get someone with basic mechanical skills to help you. |

CRAP! Well, the guy that got this S1 in a '98 issue of VTwin magazine, didn't install the one torx bolt in the tail section. Probably because he stripped the other one! So I'm going to have to drill it out? On a related note, anyone in the Columbus, Ga or Phenix City, Al area that wants to hang out? I really need a friend to wrench with. I'm military so I have access to the Class 6 for cheap beer |

Hellraged, could you send a pic of how the battery looks as you're pulling it out? I tried playing tetris with the battery before the first post, and no position seemed to work for me |

i can try to explain real fast before i take a picture, ok you take the battery and pull the bottom towards the motor so the connectors are facing the back wheel basically, then take the battery from the bottom and pull it out the little opening in the bike and bam should come out but very little work space. By the way did you already get it since thread is getting to the bottom. |

There might be a difference in the battery mount from one bike to the other. IIRC there was a recall, that relocated/repositioned the battery and the voltage regulator. Depending on whether the recall was done on this bike, the battery could be installed "this way" or "that way". Get a shop manual for the S1. It is indispensible. It is the Bible. It is required reading. There will be a quiz later. |

"Get a shop manual for the S1." You can download it right from this site. No brainer. |

Okay finally got it off, kind of! The make a screw driver notch method didn't work, part of the top broke off. So I went the easy out method, but the bit broke inside the hole. So I got mad and used a dremel cutting wheel on what was left of the bolt head, The tail slid off but the bolt is still in there. |

If you have the bodywork out of the way and it's just broken-bolt-in-metal-tab...use heat and penetrant. It'll loosen up and come out if you're patient. |

oh, the bolt is out now! I'mm considering selling the bodywork, I know that they aren't making more of it and it's valuable, not sure if I'll need the gas tank too |

I don't have the rear fender, that is the most commonly chopped piece on an S1 I put the seat back on and it looks pretty mean without the bodywork. |
