HI guys

I went out to look at a 99 s3 today .. the bike was showing 10k on the odometer .. It also had not been registered since 1996. The owner had the motor out and in boxes. He stated that it was making a funny noise so he and his buddy dropped the motor. They commenced to tear it down but could not find a "smoking gun" . From what i can tell this bike has been torn apart for the last five years .. He kept saying that he wanted to part it out ... which would be a real shame ..

I offered the owner $900 ... what do you all think .. is this too much or too little for this hot mess .. the owner seems to want more .. and well me I don't know ..

900? If you think all the parts look good, I'd do it. Not more than that though.

I don't know, for a "kit bike" (some assembly required) you might could go up to $1100, if you don't mind doing the reassembly. Especially if it's only the motor that's torn down.

10K is not that many miles. I wonder if there was something as simple as a loose primary chain? Coulda been a bad tensioner, those 99's had that thinner, weaker version.

Your biggest problem (besides seals and such) will be trying to figure it out without having observed the problem yourself. I'd do it (if I had the $$), but that's just me.

I have bought two rolling tubers for I beleive 700 and 800 without motors, I think 900 sounds cheap, I would myself even be able to go a bit higher, if it is complete. What condition is the bodywork in?

The bodywork looks good. It is the yellow with purple frame .. the brake lever is bent up and the original blinkers are missing ..

The owners says the bike has a bad crank bearing. I find it a bit hard to believe.

I'm going to wait a few days then call him back. He seems to think he is going to put it back together. I told him that would be great just don't part it out

He really wanted to get $2000 for the bike which I thought was way to high

$2000 is a lovely dream that he needs to wake up from.

$900 sounds fair for a project, assuming it's pretty much complete.

The crankpin and connecting rods are all scarred up. Maybe flywheel is the wrong term.

Pull the oil pump and see if the gears look good. The noise may have been gear teeth and the scars from metal bouncing around?

The cases are all ready split. I can see the galling and wear marks on the above mentioned parts.

The oil pump drive is good
