During an hour ride I noticed some sparatic rattling noises coming from the primary case at least thats what i could gather. The bike was shifting into 2nd gear fine before and during most of the ride. The only thing I noticed was that the bike's top speed was not where it should be only around 60 mph. I figured the clutch just needed adjustment. Near the end of the ride it would not shift into 2nd gear. I decided I would pull the primary cover and inspect. I found that the Bolt for the secondary transmission shaft had been pulled out. It stripped the threads. If you remember I went through the transmission right after I bought it see transmission tech. Is there something inside the transmission I may have missed? I doubt it... Was the clutch just out of adjustment? Or are there any other possible causes for these symptoms? Nothing else appeared damaged by inspection.

It is the TorX head Screw that actually holds the secondary shaft in place. It wasnt in any of those pictures. It has a tapered shoulder and a special washer that goes with it. If this doesnt help clerify I will look up a suitable picture and post it.

You know not to adjust the primary according to the manual - right?

??? Not really what is there to adjust in the primary other than the clutch? It looks like the chain is held in tension by the Spring Nylon tensioner peice. and that the shifter selector was the only thing that really had an adjustment for. Where you used the drillbit to position it correctly.Other than that Im not sure how things are supposed to be adjusted. I know Im pretty new and I havent read over all of the forum but I have just been doing things that seem logical to me... I do wonder if noises are normal when you are riding, if the clutch being out of adjustment causes low top speeds, and what caused that bolt to strip. I dont expect anyone to pinpoint the cause. Im just asking everyone here cause theres lots of good experience on this forum.

P.S. I saw another blaster riding by my house the other day

The primary adjustment must be very loose, then adjust clutch, then adjust primary by sound method, after doing it the manual way - lol - sounds like that bolt is all the way in!

Sure - set it to factory except 12 flats out - should be quiet then - or the engine's normal noises, then slowly loosen till a change in sound occurs, then tighten till new sound disappears, lock down and enjoy!
Pretty simple - do after motor is totally warmed up.

And so the factory manual has it too tight then. Can someone recommend a particular torque tool for that bolt, since the torque on it is so low?

I replaced the Torx Flat screw with a grade 5 Allen Flat screw they are a little more available and used locktight and tightened it as much as I could with my 3/8 drive long rachet. im thinking its at about 35-40 ft-lbs which is what you would normally torque a 5/16 bolt that goes into a steel hole to. Not the 13-17 ft-lbs that the book says. It seems to me that the Blast Repair manual was poorly written or at least was not properly maintained throughout the years. they could have changed some things that were known to cause problems like proper adjustment of the primary. But its pretty easy to work on so if you do mess up like I did its not too big of an ordeal to get in and fix it.
