Hi there, sorry to make my 1st post a cry for help but I am stumped! Ive had my 05 xb12x uly for 3 months and had to fit a new fan. That went well and the bike ran for a month, but this morning I took it down the road and it stalled when I pulled the clutch in. It started just fine but ran really lumpy, kept wanting to stall, revs rising and lowering. Every time it stalled it started again 1st prod but wouldnt tick over. I can hold the throttle at approx 3k and the revs fluctuate between 2k and 4k, occasionally dropping down to a few hundred and rising or dropping and stalling. It backfires a bit, and is a nightmare to ride. The bike is used everyday, and the fuel is good, no engine lights. I know bugger all about Buells (had loads of other bikes and can spanner a bit). I have trawled the other posts, but it could be anything! Not sure why the revs would RISE as if it was a fuel starvation problem it would just drop off and be a sod to start wouldnt it? There is a costant quiet whine when i ride (was there when i bought it so not sure if this is normal). I have seen loads of other posts saying reset the TPS, which i am guessing is Throttle Position Sensor (?), but where is this and how do I do it? Any replies welcome, please bear in mind that I dont have bags of money to throw at the bike, so taking it to a dealer is a no-go, and I need to get it running so I can get to work! - cheers, Jon |

OK its exactly what happened to my 05 xb9sx http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/620107.html?1300565388 I've clean the injectors and it seam to resolve the inconstant rpm but I'm guessing its a tps problem you'll need a ECMspy software and a cable to connect it to the pc, so you can make a proper tps reset Go to this page and take a look http://www.ecmspy.com/ (Message edited by motoqueiro on May 16, 2011) |

ok, I will whip the injectors out tomorrow and clean them. Any tips on how to go about it? (do's and donts... I have never owned a fuel injected bike.... or anything for that matter lol). I guess I need to get a manual for this one, its a bit more complicated that the old ones I am used to stripping down. EMCspy.... It sounds mega-complicated. Should I be allowed loose on it or will I bugger up my bike? I am definitely not computer literate (although I can open a mouse with a file...) |

neither the tasks are difficult but... The injectors you must be caution not to swap them, the task can be perform without a motor rotation but it will demand a lot of patience from you, ans I do recommend you get a service manual, you can get a free one on-line from a 2003 xbr buell and a parts book to The ECMspy has a basic button so you don't mess around the sensitive bits If you do go cleaning the injectors, they are very sensitive so be very careful You have to remove the intake box completely, I removed the intake manifold and clean everything give me your mail address and I send you the parts book and service manual for the 03 xbr if you want |

cheers, you have mail, my email is jon.13@btinternet.com Is the constant whine normal? I am guessing its the fuel pump, but I could be wrong. I forgot to mention, when I fitted the new fan I wired a small LED with resistor across it just so I could see if the fan came on when stuck in traffic. It has worked fine for the last month so I cant see that being related to my current problem, but you never know. |

the fuel pump does make some noise you need a led to tell you if the fan is on??? damn I have a very loud exhaust and still ear the damn fan... mail sent |

cheers mate, the parts diagram might make cleaning the injectors easier, I reckon I will have to invest in a proper Haynes Manual though (ie one that shows how to do certain jobs step-by-step with photos). As for the tuning guide, BLOODY HELL!!! I have never seen so many abbreviations and figures in my life! Is it really written in english cos I got halfway through the first page and I hadnt got a clue what was going on. I didnt realise just what a whole lot of electronic mumbo-jumbo I was getting into... I am far more at home working on xs650s or gsxr1100s, I really have no clue at all about what any of the pages of that manual mean. Going to try removing the injectors tomorrow and cleaning them, what should I look out for and what should I clean them with and how? I have cleaned plenty of sparkplugs before using sandpaper, but as I mentioned I have never owned a vehicle with injectors. I that fails then I havent got a clue what I will do cos I need the bike to get to work. REALLY starting to regret buying this bike now |

Just downloaded the service manual, I think I will try the error codes 1st, hopefully it will point me in the right direction. |

the tuning guide is to use whit the ECMspy software, I recommend you get, if not, just to do the tps reset ting, you will need-it! To clean the injectors take care whit them, don't swap them, mark the front one and the rear one, the electric plugs to, I used very low pressure air and wd40 to clean the sludge inside the injector They are secured by a clamp, after removing the fuel line, the fuel rail is secure by a screw and the injectors are clamped to the rail and O ring'd to the manifold, I've removed the entire manifold to clean The manual book is god You don't need a haynes. go to page 4-123 THROTTLE BODY and go from there The manual you just need to figure-it out Try to find some one near you that have a ECMspy to help you out on the tps reset thing, as its probably the first thing you should do to the bike I've been riding my bike for 6 years now. I ride to work every day no mater what, but some times I had to go on the brother XT... The buell is an extreme bike to ride, cool as hell I love it no mater what she throws at me |

Think I have killed it. I have followed the diagnostic advise for error code 21 (muffler actuator) and now my throttle wont move!! You are right about it being an extreme bike to ride, but its a pig to work on. Lost count of the number of bikes I have owned over the years, but I have never had as much hassle as this! |

Jonny... Are you uaing the Buell service manual? Or something else? Also, unless you are just doing a TPS reset, why are you messing with TunerPro? |

Reepicheep, I am using the buell service manual. I have just been having a look at the tuning manual to see if I could get my head around the whole TPS issue. Looks far too complicated though, seems like I've got to download this and install that, try to find out what hundreds of abbreviations mean, make up leads to hook the bike up to my laptop etc etc... basically got to be Bill Gates just to adjust the throttle! Whatever happened to just tightening the throttle cable by twisting a nut? Dont suppose there is a 'TPS Reset Guide For Dummies' out there anywhere is there? Its looking more and more like I am about to get shafted by my (not so) local H.D. dealer. |

First, it is (in many ways) a closed loop system... so trying to make assumptions about what it is doing based on what is wrong is going to be a lot different then non modern fuel injected bikes. That doesn't mean the symptoms don't help find the problem, but it does mean some of the lessons we learned in the days of a two stroke with a leaky carb boot might not apply any more. If the bike gets bad data in, it will try and fix it. So for example if an O2 sensor has gone crazy, the bike will be adjusting to try and compensate for those crazy inputs (it thinks you just went from death valley to mount everest in 300 milliseconds). So what it does as a result could be all over the map... And you are right about the factory manual process for adjusting the throttle cables... its a bit complicated and involved, though it will work if you follow it. I think you have the throttle cables adjusted wrong... so start by redoing that. After that, if it were me, I'd start by looking at the bank angle sensor. Not so much because I think that is the problem, but because it could be the problem, it has been known to fail, and it's easy to test. The TPS reset isn't a bad idea either, but I don't think that is generally a "sudden onset" problem unless you have been messing with the ECM (swapping it, ECM Spy, tuner pro, etc). Other problems people have seen include cracked ECM motherboards, chafed wires, loose grounds, etc... |

If you wish simplify your life and leave fuel injection behind, it is quite possible. I found a suitable 60-year-old SU H6 carburetor here in Florida, you should be able to find one in England. Intake manifold, XL module, VOES, cam position sensor, dual fire coil, and petcock are the only parts to find or buy once you have chosen a carburetor. I think your ECM has internal issues. |
