Regarding the frame sliders that are on the Hal's race bike, and nearly every other XB that is used as a track bike: How are they mounted? I've seen dozens of pictures of them showing the slider itself, but usually the fairing hides seeing the slider mount. Do they heliarc a mount onto the bottom edge of the frame? | ||

There welded on.But you can replace the slider itself in a mishap. | ||

I'm not sure I'd like to guineau-pig someone heliarc welding one of those to my frame! I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be covered under warranty!  I'm still feeling out the LSL crash pads I just mounted. I figure those, in combination with the Trojan C/F sliders ought to save the frame at least... Chris | ||

Its not the welding I am worried about...its the sealent inside the tank that I am worried about. My Gf suggested Tig welding the tabs on. She is a certified welder who sat there and shook her head at the welds on the outside of the frame saying she could do them smoother and more flush  | ||

Isn't heliarc and tig welding one in the same. Looks like the frame welds are done with a mig gun. (wire feed) | ||

Reason I say the frame was mig gun welded is because on some of my welds they didn't even grind off some of the splatter or as we call it "buckshot" In the world of welding, on this type of product, that is very poor craftsmenship. Just talkin about the welds. | ||

Now that I think about it, about a week ago I was looking at one of the welds. They actually started the weld about 3/4" away from the joint and ran the bead all the way too the joint where they started the penitration. Very,very sloppy. That also should have been properly cleaned up before being sent to paint. | ||

By the time you're getting ready to weld on slider mounts you're probably already past the point of voiding any warranty. The ones who have done and can do a good job of welding on the slider mounts also can take care of the sealant inside the cavity after the welding. Wycked, Can she weld them smoother and more flush at a production volume rate and get the same strength value from the job? No question that a good welder can do a better looking job one frame at a time. Talk her into starting to build bicycle frames, there's a good but small market if she can come up with good geometry. | ||
