Makes sense. A MOSFET VR can in theory dissipate very little power, because you can make a MOSFET have virtually no forward drop.

Not so much an SCR regulator, because of the minimum forward drop of the SCR.

I would love to see someone mount one coming through the under tail, it would be cool to see the fins poking through, don't care which R/R is is either.

This was my first shot at relocating it, I canned it....

Is there room to mount one in front of one of the fans so that when the ran runs, it helps cool the VR too? Just brainstormin'...

Sparky- Yes. The reason I moved this was because of the heat from the aluminum fan mount, that thing gets pretty warm.

As far as the heat from the exhaust, that was no where near what I thought it would be, but that fan mount bolts right into the head and it gets warm.

My voltage dropped today to 12.5V, then I switched off the heated grips, and it returned back to normal. After a stop things were normal in a range of 13.6-14.1V. Ignition cover was very hot. I was only able to touch it for a few seconds maximum.
I'm on my second stator and harness upgrade is installed. I removed the seat and touched the VR after the ride. It was not that hot, and I noted it's made by Ducati. Should I contact the dealer? I still have a factory warranty, and also extended warranty.

Yugi, 12.5 volts at idle is perfectly normal with the harness upgrade. If you were cruising down the highway and it just started dropping, then that is reason for concern.

My 09CR never drops below 13.X regardless of the temperature or high-beam. That's with the harness and Erik Buell Racing ECM. Normally operates between 13.8-14.4 Volts. For those who de-noided, make sure the plug (resistor) is in the correct connector - if improperly connected, the third leg will stay off.

I found out the hard way. HD service incorrectly connected the plug (resistor).

at least your dealer tried to plug it in.
When i picked my bike up i turned it on and found a CEL, i removed the seat at the dealer and found the resistor laying their under the seat, I asked the tech what happened, and he said "Oh, i didn't know what to do with that, so i just left it there" I said don't you think it would probably blow out the back of the bike on the freeway? Not to mention that i dropped the bike off with no CEL ,and when i picked it up it had a CEL.

Never dropped below 13.4V before. Usually stays in 13.5-14.2 range. In the last few weeks I started to see the drops to 13.2 first, and then, today, to 12.5V. I think, it's alarming. I connected the resistor myself, as the dealer left the harness not connected to anything at all!

I am no expert, but if it doesn't drop into the 12's at a hot idle, 190* coolant temp, then my opinion is your harness is not working correctly. I have verified, by removing the harness while idling, that the harness does indeed cause the displayed voltage to drop into the 12.x range. You must have all three legs working at idle to see 13+ volts, with a hot engine.

Today voltage dropped to 12.2V at idle, and the coolant temperature raised significantly, disconnected the headlights, it became better, but drops to 13V at idle. I guess it's going to fail pretty soon.

Today voltage dropped to 12.2V at idle

That is typical for my bike...09 with harness upgrade.

Together with coolant temp increase?
My went from 172 to 192 in just about 30 seconds. This was not the case before.
Well, we'll see in a few days.

Yugi, if the voltage gets to low, then the ecm will shut off the fans. I thought it was 12.1 volts, but may do it at 12.2. Without the fans running, the coolant temp rises very quickly if not moving.

Yugi, what you are seeing is exactly what it should be doing with the harness upgrade. IF you aren't losing voltage at cruising speeds, everything is normal.

If, at some point in the past, you weren't dropping down into the 12s at idle with the harness upgrade, something was broken back then, not now.

Yugi,

I know for fact that when the plug was incorrectly placed by HD, when running on two legs, the voltage dropped to 12.X ad idle. So you are right. The third leg might be on all times.

I checked the wiring - all correct. Other people here also run similar voltages. So I'm not sure what's going on.

Developments for today:
At idle, voltage fell to 12.1V, right cooling fan was shut down, coolant temperature rose to 205 degrees, battery light on.

But nothing changed since then, except I installed 3rd party LED turn signals. They flash fast when the engine is not running, but normal when the engine is running.

anyone try mounting R/R behind the license plate?

I thought about mounting the FH012AA on the licence plate on the Evotech tail tidy but decided that there could be issues with the security of the mounting, therefore I fitted the R/R in the tail area under the pillion/seat cowl and drilled some airflow holes in the seat undertray - it works well so far.
