I will be looking for the info, as I know it is here and we've done it before but just can't remember, as it's been a while. Is the stator nut right hand thread or left hand? Also - can't remember how we braced the flywheel to get the stator nut off without buying the special little tool? Just don't recall how we did it the first time. What do ya'll use? Failure to launch last night. Push start got me half way home, replaced battery this morning but stator appears the culprit after thorough check. Off to read... |

Themagster, What, another one? The crank nut is right handed threads, the clutch nut is left handed. The crank nut torques to 190 ft lbs(I would probably torque it to the 220 for the XBs) Use plenty of red locktite. The clutch nut is 90 ft lbs. You have to use the lock bar to hold things from moving when you torque things down. I have a bar I would mail you but you can make one out of flat stock, aluminum or steel, it's really easy to do. When you are in there, make sure the cover that holds the stator wires down away from the flywheel are not sharp, and I always spooge a big gob of silicone sealer unde the plate to keep the wires from vibrating and wearing through the wire insulation and shorting out. Hey Swampy - thanks so much - Thumper had thought of the lock bar but wondered if there was a better way. He'll be working on it. He says to tell you and the family hello & hopes all is well. Saw you let the sporter go, you have a heart! Oh and Thumper says to tell you the silicone is a great idea. Yeah - another stator replacement. The '05 was replaced at 51,000, this bike just rolled over 37,000. I am just praying it's not a bad sign. |

It's not a bad sign, I think that the big problem is those wires rubbing through under the hold down plate, those edges are sharp from the factory. |

While your there do the shift pawl adjustment, it improves shifting and is easy and only requires the correct size drill bit - lol EZ |

Thumper made the tool out of flat stock & dremel - worked great. Stator was most certainly the culprit - I'm sure you saw the pic on main page. Everything else looked good inside even chain guide in good shape. Tying too keep positive, really want this bike last, just can't imagine riding anything else. Will be looking into the shift pawl adjustment info. |
