Hey guys just wondering if u guys had any opinions on the extended warranty. Mine is going to expire in June and Harley is sending me a bunch of extended warranty cards and I don't know if I should or not. I had the stator replaced and had the wire harness upgrade, I also put the fmf pipe and the ebr ECM and it's been problem free since. My concern is that if something does go wrong with the bike will Harley even have parts, I would hate to pay all that money for the warranty and be stuck waiting for months for parts. Any opinions would be much appreciated.

In my opinion, its a waste of money. It is a form of insurance, and you would need something major to happen to recuperate the expense. Short of a engine or transmission failure, that isn't going to happen.

The two most common issues have been the stator and clutch leaks, both of which can be fixed for a fifth of the cost of the 5 year warranty extension. Then, you are stuck bringing it to a Harley dealer to get it done, you can't bring it to an independent shop.

Another major con, if your bike is stolen/totaled, even if you are still under the factory warranty, you can only get a small amount refunded. I went through the BS several years ago with my Ulysses. I bought the bike brand new with the 5 year warranty extension, and 7 months after buying the bike I was in an accident. Insurance company totalled it, I got $200 of the $1500 back, despite the fact that I was about a year and a half away from the warranty kicking in.

Do yourself a favor, take the $1500, put it in a savings account for a rainy day. If you do need work in the future, get it done at an independent shop for a fraction of the cost of a HD dealer. Or the more likely situation is that you will collect some interest on that $1500, and you can buy plenty of beer with it. : )

Extended Service Plans work, but it depends on how many miles you ride a year! If your only riding a few thousand miles a year, it's not worth it. As a former service manager for h-d/Buell, I've seen it pay for it self several times. If you decide to renew you plan, be sure to add the tire warranty. Unlimited tires for the life of the contract, but the tire must have at least 3/32" tread left on it.

I agree with Froggy completely. There are cases where the warranty will pay off but they are so rare to make it an unreasonable gamble.

If you've made it through the 2 year warranty without the motor blowing up - particularly if you've done the 12k mile service, I'd recommend skipping it. IF you do your own work, it is a total no-brainer.

Like any extended warranty, you're betting you're going to claim, the company is betting you won't. A 5 year extension will run about $1,400 but I can get a better price for you (pm me) Its not just a warranty on your bike. Covers towing, rental replacement, travel lodging, there are limits but its more piece of mind. Transferable to a new owner is a good thing when selling for those not keeping for life. It can be cashed in and its prorated on a perday setup.
Its not just an extension, the standard warranty is upgraded with the rental, lodging etc.
Some say its a con, those whom have claimed were glad they had it! I had a claim for the clutch leak, they picked up the bike, fixed it, returned it. My cost $50. Don't forget the whole machine is covered. If you price some of the Buell parts, things can be expensive.
Put the money in the bank saving account, good luck getting any interest worth bothering with!

I believe in warranties. I tend to get them on anything I buy that costs over $1000. So far I feel like I'm ahead.

Here's my thoughts for our bikes.

Stator issue.... fixed under warranty.
Clutch seal issue.... fixed under warranty.

Even though it was the new warranty thats what paid for it. Neither issue was a "recall."

Now some tech, who odds are rarely works on Buells did the work. If anything else got messed up/ missed it will be a warranty or your pocket book that handles it.

However.... you are adding mods. The slip-on won't affect anything but the Erik Buell Racing ECM can void parts of your warranty. Basically if a mod can be deemed to have been the cause of a failure then warranty will not cover it.

So if a 5yr extension will cover you for $1400 ($24/mnth) and you're keeping the bike thats long (most sport bike ppl switch out every 3-5 yrs) then maybe its a good option for you. I would also look at the 3rd party option Usanigel is offering because considering the wait times for stuff with HD stores it may prove a good option.

I appreciate the imput but I think my money will be better spent on getting all three manuals( I think there are three from what I read on here, I only have one) I consider myself to be a relatively decent with a wrench and I'm guessing some time in the future there might not be anyone around who knows how to fix these bikes anyways.

If there were an abundance of good Buell techs out there, the math might be different. So far, I haven't met one that knew more than I do about the bike, even though the sales guys always tell you their guy is the "best in the country".

This is a religious debate to some ... Kind of pointless really since it's all about what YOU think is best for your situation. I never buy them, 50+ vehicles later - But I did the 7 Yr (+5 years after OEM ends)for $1,254 from a Harley dealer.

I don't have the tools, time, or maybe even the talent if it's major to fix the bike myself. I want to keep it, and I have a great servicing dealer. So things like the stator, clutch leak, etc are things I don't have to worry about.

And if it never breaks anything between now and Oct 2016, the peace of mind would have been worth $1,250 to me. Let's just hope H-D keeps parts around ... Probably my biggest concern. I know from running Services business that an abundance of contract obligations tends to help in that area.

From what I was told $500 for the five year. But it's on all the bikes including Harleys.

i know it has probably been put on here before but what if it wasn't under warranty would it cost the customer to repair a failed stator? i know that labor rates and part prices can vary from dealer to dealer but just a ballpark figure.

Really depends what you replace. with all Buell parts could be as much as $1565.70 for parts. Includes stator $680, regulator $135, rotor $737, gasket $14. Thankfully you don't normally replace the rotor. On top of these prices is the labor. Only problem with DIY is no warranty on electrical parts you install from most places.

A rewind is the cheapest way to go as long as this is the correct fix in your case. I would expect a 2 maybe 3 hour labor rate from the dealer.

I can still get you the great price on the extended warranty as long as its within the next few days. Price increase did go into effect March first. Pm for details.

so pretty much one stator failure will cost about 2/3 of what an extended warranty would cost you in just parts,im not figuring the cost of the rotor, with labor that would put you right up to the cost of the warranty give or take a few dollars.

my 09 cr in 7k miles has had

stator failure
ecm failure
inst cluster
clutch switch
the right side fan failure
fuel psi sensor

all of those parts plus the time to diag and replace the part in labor is probably worth about 50% or more of the bikes value.
i may just be crazy but that extended warranty sounds pretty good the more and more stuff is failing on this bike.

The best part is, the issue isn't even fixed! Or you can spend $350 once and get the bike fixed for good at an independent shop.

Learning about your motorcycle and doing your own repairs is second to none in my opinion.

If time, knowledge, willingness, ability, and resources of doing your own repairs are not available, my choice would be an independent shop that I was familiar with, or others speak highly of.

I do strongly believe the purchase of an extended warranty is a good choice with the 1125 though!

One of my local independent shops has an 1125R painted on the building, and they also have a 1125R race bike, so I would hope so. : )

I agree, but many do not have the time, tools, skills and facilities to do such repairs. I can do the minor things no problem, but a stator replacement is beyond what I can do.

It's sure a tough call, but if you read most of the posts on here the 1125 is not very reliable or cheap to repair. What breaks is expensive (non aftermarket). $1,300 is not pocket change either for the warranty. Simple stuff, I'll do but the other things are controlled by software and that needs very expensive and exclusive tools to "read". My old Triumph I can rebuild with nothing too special. This Buell.....no way.

I also feel its good to have if I sell the bike. Relax its got a warranty!
