Well, I was going to post the original receipt I found in the back of some paperwork that came with my bike, but I crash every time I try to upload the image. It is not image size, I have it down to 90kb. I think it might be my browser, I am running Firefox 4.0 Beta 12. Anyway, the receipt is from Redline Cycle Services in Skokie Illinois. The original owner took the S2 to them in 1998 for a bump-up in power. They installed Thunderstorm heads, 10.2:1 +.10 pistons (#22678-98y), Screaming Eagle cam set, and an adjustable ignition module. Total bill was $2725.14. The heads were $250 apiece. So, I was just curious if anyone has a similar setup, with horsepower numbers? I know I have all the grunt I need that never fails to put a smile on my face, but I am just wondering what my approximate horsepower might be. Shane |

That kit really does match what I have Butch. You will enjoy the results. I think they went .10 over on mine to match the pistons to the bores. |

Butch- digging through the archives I found this- "They get that 76hp figure from a better air cleaner and exhaust system than a standard Sportster. On the dyno, a stock S2 tends to pull about 65hp. The 91hp Lightning and 91hp Thunderstorm motored bikes tend to pull about 75-77hp on the dyno. The 101hp Thunderstorm bikes tend to pull about 84-85. There's a lot of variation though. Older t-storm bikes tend to pull a little more. I recently pulled a '98 S1w with slip-on and air cleaner that made 93hp after a tune-up. Count me among those who prefer the S2. I chose to port the stock heads rather than put on Thunderstorms just because I wanted to keep the bike original looking. Just a stage 1 job, matched with some Lightning cams, makes 87hp with a slip-on. Thunderstorm heads have a bigger chamber to accomodate their bigger valves, and they use a domed piston to get back to 10:1, be sure to figure that into your costs if you go that route. The factory cast pistons are very reasonably priced, or you can spring for a premium forged piece." So I am guessing that an S2 Thunderstorm conversion is going to be in the 75-80 HO at the rear wheel. |

Shain: Dyne-ode my S2T at 79,000 miles with vance-Hines muf. and Mikuni carb and other-wise stock. 60 hp and 68 ft. lbs.@5200 rpms .Still a respectable Stump puller. It will pull like my 1999 S3 with factory race package I think, but with heaver flywheel.Frank and Brad have alot of experience on this subject too.I ride so much my truck has spider webs all over it in riding season!!!10 to 15,000 mile a season. |

The S2 heads are stock sporty heads with a hemispherical combustion chamber, like these. Thunderstorm heads have a more closed combustion chamber to increase compression. Notice the raised area on the sides. The XB/1200R heads are tighter still and are the best buell/sporty heads in stock form. You would need domed pistons in order to increase compression (from 9:1 stock) on a S2 with original heads. Flat-top pistons are used with the T'storm and XB heads to get 10:1 unless you want really high compression with domed XB9 pistons (~12:1). But |
