Hi. Have a 99 Lightning done 14000 miles. regularly serviced runs like a dream and had no major problems , until..... My primary adjuster broke ( hadn't had the recall done (I'm in New Zealand , and I imported from California in 06) . It may have been broken for a while as it didn't completely break off . In the middle of no-where the clutch started to slip , and got worse as I tried to get to the nearest town. Just reached town as the clutch gave out completely. After removing primary found a large piece of plastic missing from the adjuster shoe which had been ground off. Left little pieces of plastic everywhere. I removed the clutch plates and cleaned out the gearbox. The steel plates aren't warped or excessively grooved and the friction plates are within specs. The diaphragm spring and pressure plate seem Ok. Put everything back and clutch is still the same.. Just trying to find if anyone has had similar experiences or read any posts relating to this problem. Is it possible the plastic could destroy the friction plates? One thing I have noticed that I have to go past the point of the clutch adjuster lightly bottoming out to get the ramp and ball hook (for the clutch cable) to be in a position it will work. sorry.. first thing I did was replace the adjuster -my broken adjuster was the old (thinner plate) one that had the safety recall. I was hoping that was all the problem was...but no luck. -Replaced adjuster and blew out all shredded plastic , adjusted primary chain and refilled with clean oil... still the same -Removed clutch plates. cleaned and checked - still the same Found another post with a similar problem where the clutch spring was no good...maybe the way to go. | ||

Toss the "Grenade" plate and replace with 2 steel and 1 fiber. | ||

Replaced friction and steel plates, used old plates to replace the "grenade" plate.....shes running like a dream...awesome. Until tonight..... rode for an hour. stopped at a shop started her up , she idled for a bit then cutout , went to start her again and the side of the battery blew out (top half of the battery casing gone?) I just think she was mad it took me so long to fix the clutch? Hopefully we're even now.. | ||

Ugh! Also, hopefully you took steps (baking soda rinse, soap & water, etc.) to neutralize the collateral damage that acid can cause. | ||

Actually just flush with water top to bottom and inside out etc. right away otherwise it's to late anyway. Time is essential. Good luck. |
