One of the guys I work with use to be stationed in Phoenix. He loved Arizona and told me of a hellatious road? going to Crown King from the South. Sounds like a good time and a challenge. I looked it up on Google maps and up pops the Crown King Saloon. I think I need a drink! Anybody experienced this before? |

Yes I have been up the back way to Crown King too many times to count. Neat place! Years ago I would go up about every weekend in the winter. Take on a little alcohol and have a blast coming back down. If you ever get down here, do make plans to do the ride. |

I don't know if I have time this year but I will make it out there. Looks like an awesome ride on the mountain ridges. Just looking at the satellite view is awesome. Thanks for the encouragement, sounds like this one goes on the bucket list! |

That brings back memories. I lived in Phoenix in the early '80's. The ride to Crown King and the Saloon was a regular destination. We went in from the South but I can't remember the exact route. It was nothing you could take a Uly on. We rode enduro's and trials bikes and it was pretty rough riding - mostly goat trails. I know there are some much better roads there but that wouldn't have been as much fun. The stop at the saloon for a beer and to have lunch (there was a place to eat across the street at that time) made it a nice day ride. |

My friend was telling me he use to see four wheel drive trucks and jeeps just pushed off the road because they broke and it wasn't worth the trouble to come back and get them!! He rode ATV's up there and hunted a lot. He has a picture of a mountain lion he got from that area on his tool box. I don't think I can get up a goat trail but there is supposed to be a Crown King Road from the south and then it goes East after Crown King. I'm just going to have to investigate further! |

+1 on Crown King. I used to live in New River 15+ years ago and made the trip many times ... many different routes and vehicles. This is absolutely a wonderful area to explore. On a Uly, you might try the Bumble Bee/Cleator/Crown King route if roads are dry. I DO NOT suggest any route from the south in anything less than a short wheelbase 4WD or dirt bike. The old broken down Dodge Power Wagon off to the side of the road stands testament to the trouble one can find. The good news is that many of the real tough spots have alternative tracks nearby. I give a thumbs up on this ride! I remember the food at the saloon was pretty good and the beer was cold. Man, I miss Arizona ... |

oops ... strike that. The roads are crap, the beer is stale, and it is WAY TOO DARN HOT in the desert ... There! See you in Suches!! |
