Anybody watching the oil useage? I did a cold check on front and rear stands so pretty level and needed to add a little over half a quart. Last checked about 800 miles ago. Just under 5000 miles on bike. Will keep a closer record of it now. |

I believe it has been posted several times here that cold checks are not so good. I think I remember reading the documentation telling me to go out and do a hot check if I added oil with a cold check. To me this implies cold checks are not accurate? |

Checking the oil is a pain and very inconsistent. You need to check the oil the exact same way in the exact same place each time to have some consistency. Even then, I wouldn't stress over it. |

Only check your oil after riding and getting it HOT. Cold oil checks are not accurate. |

Checking the drain amounts between oil changes is probably more accurate, anyway. My experience has been these motors don't tend to develop oil consumption problems, even at high mileage and hard use. My old track motor has 40k+ on it, and it was beat to a piss. It wasn't burning hardly any oil. Basic procedure of care is straight forward: 1. Ride until shifting is a bit sticky 2. Drop the oil, filter AND screen. 3. Pour in 3 quarts. 4. Don't bother with any other procedures or checks. 5. Repeat. |

Jdugger - +1, that's what I do. |

That's how I do it. Although I can't stop myself from pulling out the dipstick and smelling it. Old habits die hard. If I smell gas I start thinking about an oil change. |

When I first got my 1125, I filled the crankcase per the manual. I noticed that the oil pressure light would come on for a second or two during hard braking, so I added a bit more oil, which eliminated the light. Now I just add three quarts when changing the oil and the light never comes on. If I ever do see it, I'll know that it's time to check the oil and top it off. |
