just doing some casual reading, so picked up my 99 M2 service manual. it recommends 10w-40 for better cold weather starts. Since I plan on riding most of this winter, (I missed alot of this summer, so I need to catch up) should I put 10w-40 in? I have always used HD 20w-50, and though I've never had too many hard starts from winter riding, the bike is getting older and wonder what everyone thinks about using this oil in cold weather. (usual riding temp here from now till spring is going to be 30-50 degrees. | ||

FWIW...Back when I owned a Blast! and was using the Harley oil, I saw the same thing in the owners/service manuals. I went to every Buell, Harley dealer and to several mom-and-pop bike shops searching for Harley 10W40. No one had any and when I got one shop to order some 10w40 Harley oil, it was so old the specs didn't match what was required in the service info. Every one that I asked about the oil suggested I continue using the 20W50, just to let it warm up well before riding/abusing it. I ride my Lightning down to the upper 30's. Lower than that, I ride the watercooled bike. | ||

If your bike is garaged then you can continue to use the 20w oil. If the bike is left outside in the 30's then use the 10w and monitor oil consumption. If it starts to rise mix in 20w. Bottom line - I wouldn't worry about it.. | ||

If you are running synthetic, which you should be, it shouldn't matter. |
