Here in NH the the roads are great for riding - but the bikes are put away early. I was wondering - is there another part of the country that has twisties - like alot of 35 MPH roads where winter does not dominate the year. I have lived in Harpers Ferry WV and the roads are awesome bike roads - and the winters are mild. Any suggestions where I should move to?

Texas has the Hill Country, where the roads are open year-round; with the exception of thunder storms which cause flooded creek crossings. My favorite roads are the "Three Sisters" FM 335, 336 and 337. Otherwise, SW Colorado is close to heaven; but the Hill Country is much closer for me! Lots of videos online, but here's a short clip someone with a Firebolt placed:

Just about anywhere in north-western Arkansas has great roads. Just look at a map....HWY 62 is a good one, or how about Devils den State park?

Arkansas is to date the most beautiful I've ridden in.

NW Arkansas and southern Missouri are hard to beat. More or less anywhere in the northwest *quarter* of the state is good. Pretty much the best riding around other than perhaps California and North Carolina areas.

Don't bother with Texas Hill Country. The roads are crap and they are full of cops and cruisers. Plus, the 3 best (the "sisters") wouldn't be good enough to bother with by Arkansas standards. Crappy surface, crappy turns, too much straight, etc.

Ukiah, CA. We live in a valley surrounded by roads that criss-cross over mountains to the beautiful and fun Hwy 1 along the Mendocino Coast or inland to Calistoga.

I've traveled pretty thoroughly over the Western US including CO and Utah and the roads here need make no apologies and are much tighter than most roads in those other places. The last 22 miles of Hwy 1 to Leggett is 22 miles of 25-30 mph turns alone!!!! Then there is the legendary Skaggs Springs Rd. from 101 to Stuart's Point which is a felony road of Biblical proportions.

I love living here!!!

+1 to Jdugger. I love the roads in the Arkansas Ozark Mountains. I went last spring, and will be there again next spring. The roads here in North Texas are boring.

"They say Californy is the place you oughta be so load up the truck..." (Beverly Hillbillys)
I live in central California, halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Moved here from Jersey 22+ years ago and am still in awe of living here, and a BIG part of that is the riding. And the whole motorcycle culture. Sportbikes, dirt bikes, choppers, tourers, vintage, racers, it's all here. One of my riding crew is a very well known moto-journalist and world traveler, chose this area to live. Coulda gone anywhere. Not to take anything away from any part of the state, it's all good. Last time I checked something like 25% of the country's motorcycles were in this state. And hippie chicks!!!

SE TN, N GA, or W SC. Probably the warmest twisties with out heading due West for a long long way.

I thought someday I settle into retirement around Sevierville or Pigeon Forge TN.

+1 on the Texas Hill Country. Leakey, TX.

Pretty much depends on if you want to be near big metro areas or not. Or just close enough.

Thanks for the input! I never thought of TX, AR or MO for riding, I have just never been there. In the winter I put the bikes in the truck and take them South for a week or two. Thinking South and West would be a nice change for this year.

Texas is a fantastic place to live, there's no doubt, just understand the roads are crap.

Dallas is kind of a nice compromise, honestly.
There's two fantastic race tracks within an hour's drive that have lots of public track days and a membership option, and within another 4 hours drive there's 3 more.

5 hours away is Arkansas and some of the best riding around. Just load the bike in the truck, highway it up there, and enjoy.

And, the economy is pretty good, and the politics and daily interference into your life by the government pretty reasonable.

By most measures, the riding season is 10-11 months. Some years less, some years more.

Oh, and no income tax.

So, all in all, it's a pretty decent choice.

Hill Country roads may not be smooth race track; but for me they're just fine for fun riding and really close. It's pretty easy to pass Glides and Wings. You don't do race pace on any street, backroad, HWY in my book. Arkansas--the Ozarks--are an awesome, beautiful place to ride; but for me it would mean 8 hrs of straight HWY and Smokey Bears just to get there. So, the hills call when I want to get away from Metropolis...Houston. If I want to go hyperspeed--the only place is a race track and Texas has quite a few good ones, and new ones being added. Just check out Hitchcock, Texas; an old Goodyear blimp base.

I went down to Concan, TX and floated the frio river this last summer with friends, and a couple of cruiser boys wouldn't stop talking about the 3 sisters and made me want to go. I think they said its around 200 miles or so of slow curvy roads. We hauled our bikes down so I had my R with me but despite liberal amounts of sunscreen I got pretty bad burnt the first day down the river and was unable move much of the weekend, much less suit up and make the ride. Hindsight being what it is and all, I should have ditched the river and gone for the 3 sisters. I live north of Dallas and it will be a while before I can make the 8 hour trip back down there. I kick myself every time I think about it.

"Smooth race track" is a total myth. Other than a rare, one-of-a-kind place like Barber, race tracks are often very bumpy and don't have pavement much better than a regular road. They do have run out and predictability, though.

Pyrogen,

H.C. ain't worth it. If you are north of Dallas, go to Arkansas instead. It's much better and much closer.

I'm not bagging on H.C. just to bag. Yea, if I lived in San Antonio I'd ride there, too. But, compared to Arkansas it's not even in the same universe in terms of amount of good roads and quality of roads. And, for us in Dallas, AR is just as close or closer.

Texas World Speedway is high-speed motocross. I always thought Henderson was a smooth track. Grand Sport in Hitchcock is new and very smooth! "Really close" means not far for me to get there! Concan is definitely a beautiful place to chill!

I have really just learned what we have here in AZ. Yes, PHX gets really hot in the summer but most of the rest of the state is a lot cooler and the roads, once outside of the city are pretty amazing - and you can ride as far as you feel like going.

So, even if you really can't handle the heat, you still have 9 months of riding. If you get adjusted to the heat, you have the whole year.

Rat,
I had a sister that lived PHX for a while and remember taking a road trip up to Flagstaff (I think) about 25 years ago. From what I can remember, reminded me more of Colorado than AZ. Seemed like a nice area. Memory is all clapped out though...

I'm in the Dallas area and I just rode down to Leakey, Tx to meet up with a Buell group from Austin. Had a blast that weekend with good people and rode the 3 sisters. Good riding! Good people!

The trip down there and back wasn't the most fun but can you really complain about a 950 mile weekend on a Buell, with good people, good roads, and good drinks after the day is done?

I'd like to get on a track, just not in the budget. I know the dangers of riding hard on the street and I'm ok with it.

Kevyn, next time you are going to head down there for a meet up and Buell ride, let me know. I'd like to go. I live in Arlington. I have a 16 foot trailer. I can haul several bikes down while riding in comfort in my newish F150. I have a Pitbull trailer mount for my 1125R.

Guys, seriously, if you haven't been to AR yet, you are driving the same distance to HC for what are relatively crappy and horrible roads.

You owe it to yourself to at least TRY it.

Well the roads around Harpers Ferry are still good for now. Live just north of Martinsburg and though it can be tough at times, pretty much can ride most of the years and the roads of WV and Western Virginia are excellent. Still a great run down US 33 from WV over to Harrisonburg VA if you have every rode that section, if not always a good time to give her a try.
