As I proceed to repair my hurt RS (broken crank), it's clear that the engine, etc. have been warmed over. I need to identify what stuff is stock/Sporty and what's not so I can ensure it all goes together properly and is all compatible. I'll start with the heads: I know it didn't come with dual plug heads, but it has them now. It looks like stock heads have just been fitted with an extra plug. Any clues for me on a source? ...Or was this a WAG by someone to make things "better"?
Here's shots of the pistons:
Pardon the carbon! It's a work in progress! Any help is appreciated. |

Looks like your photos might have been rejected. |

Yeah, I was working on the "rejection" and didn't know they posted while I was fixing. Looks OK now, but let me know if more pix would help. Thanks. |

I see the 883 cast in the bottom of the head, so I would they are modded 883 heads. I have read when people usually do an 883 to 1200 conversion they prefer the 883 head for modifying since it is easier to remove material then add for machining. |

Re; 883 Casting/Head: Good eyes! Here's a wider shot:
Any other numbers/castings that would help ID it? I noticed the "91" casting and it makes me think it's the date code. It makes sense for stock since it's a '92 model, but again, all bets are off if it's NOT a modified original. |

On another forum "XLH forum" I hope that I am allowed to mention that, I found some good info. about the different sportster heads. It talks about valve sizes, and the combustion chamber shapes, that might help you more. |

the great thing about harley, is that half(or more) of the time the part number stamped into a part isnt actually the part number... atleast not what your going to need to order the part anyway. and i cant read that number clear enough to even check it on hd net. |

No Rice: I come from a 4-wheel background and was curious if HD (and others) matched casting numbers and part numbers. (Auto guys do NOT!). Thanks for the clarification. So I'm still unsure of what I have for the heads or pistons. Anybody? I'd rather know what I'm working with instead of just re-assembling what I have (or starting over completely). I have a busted crank and no explanation, so pardon the cautionary approach. (No, it didn't break on my watch.) FYI, the head casting number for the front is 16663-86B. Pix below, and no, your vision isn't impaired, the photo is tad blurry!

ive never understood the reasoning behind having even more numbers to track down in order to figure out what the heck something is. if your going to stamp a number on something, make it the number you plan on using... ugh. anyway, 16663-86B does not come up as a valid part # on hd-net as i kind of figured it would not. |

Re; Castings VS Part #s: They look suspiciously alike, but NOOOOO! That would make too much sense. I think they do it to confuse people. It WORKS! Thanks for checking. I'm thinking there's gotta be some back-door means of deciphering a date code, etc., like I'd do on say...a Pontiac. |
