My friend Joe has two qt. of 50W and 1 qt. of 20W-50 laying around ... both from HD. He wants to know if he can mix them together and use them in his Uly. thanks . |

Might be getting a bit thick for this time of year but otherwise I'd see no problem. I always get oils that are formulated for diesel engines. Synthetic oils always seem to fit that description and dino oils typically don't. Being that HD oils are formulated for motorcycles I'd use them unless they've been on the shelf for 20 years. |

If they're both dino then I'm sure it wouldn't hurt anything but why cut corners? I continue to be amazed at people that risk expensive repairs just to save a few $$. |

Putting a straight weight 50W in any newer engine is a mistake in my book. Especially with cooler temps on the horizon. You won't get good flow into tight little places (like bearings) until it heats up. If someone felt like they absolutely HAD to use the 50W, at least put it in the gearcase (trans) instead. But I wouldn't even do that myself, just to save $10. Use a little of it at a time, like 1/2 qt in an oil change, if you just want to see it gone without waste. |
