I forgot how good looking the stock muffler looks on the bike. I just removed my D&D muffler due to noise crack down in my area. And when I removed the D&D muffler it sounded like sand in a can. Anybody ever kept there stock muffler on forever. |

I have stock mufflers on my bikes. I have tried race kits and a V&H and all just to loud for my taste. |

Has anyone compared an unmodified, stock muffler with a straight-through muffler like a V&H or D&D? I am beginning to think, with both bikes correctly jetted, the stock muffler might out-perform the aftermarket pipe in the 3,000 - 4,500 RPM range where most of us ride on the street most of the time. Any experience to share? |

Don't forget about the weight - the stockers are around 30 lbs if I recall, my current V&H feels like about 5 lbs |

I would respectfully disagree. "properly jetted" is the key here. Backpressure is always bad for making power....forget the myths about backpressure being good- it never is. The only advantage to the stock cans is noise control, looks, and a bike that runs great without the need to re-tune it because the factory did all the hard work for you! |

I just installed an OEM stainless exhaust and muffler on my 99 S3. Much quieter, I will happily trade off 5 hp or so for a relaxing ride. Noise does not equal power, Cycle World regularly dynos aftermarket exhaust and most of them only make a couple of extra hp in a narrow portion of the powerband. |

Terry, What effect did the change to stock have on mid-range power and throttle response? If my hunch is correct, you might have gained mid-range torque and lost a bit of top end power. On a street bike, I would be willing to trade top end power for mid-range torque. |

In my X1 I have switched between the stock and V&H several times for various reasons, e.g., wife complaining, broken mounting bracket, etc., and with the V&H the power delivery definitely "feels" more linear specially in the 2500-4000 RPM range. The other nice side benefit is the exhaust masks all the "normal" noises from the engine and other moving parts... |

Dave, My Butt-Dyno is not calibrated well enough to notice subtle power changes. I guess the real test would be run 1/4 mile runs before and after. |

forget the myths about backpressure being good- it never is. I respectfully kinda disagree. It's not really about backpressure, but more the pressure waves and the effect exhaust length has on the timing of said waves. A fixed length, free flowing exhaust is not the best in all conditions. It's why so many bikes have exhaust valves (XBs included). |

An aftermarket muffler on an M2 is pointless. The cams and muffler work well together. X1 and S3 on the other hand, benefit greatly from an aftermarket can. The stock can causes a pretty big hole around 3K. |

I disagree mr. Hootowl. I really like the Supertrapp muffler on my M2, nice sound and the internal disks allowed me to tune it perfectly to my own butt dyno's needs. I do like stock M2 cams A LOT. I found the White Brothers Eseries (also a disker) provided a pleasant improvement over the stock pipe. Biggest bonus, stock pipe hung up on loading ramp in the truck, aftermarket did not, plus a fair bit of weight reduction. Extra Bonus, more disks = more noise, less = less... neat huh!?!? I ran a race intake with my stock muffler, the bike didn't like that though, eventually upped the slow jet, dealership fixed the main jet when I brought the bike from CA to UT. Ran much better with improved exhaust flow to match intake flow. |

Anybody ever kept there stock muffler on forever. Both of my Buells' have NEVER seen THEIR pipes replaced.I like them quiet. Now with the Ducatis'.......another story about an engine that was overengineered and can safely accept performance mods. |

I have both a V&H and a stock pipe. I didn't mind the sound from the stock pipe at all. The V&H is loud but light. The Stock pipe is really heavy. I don't really care if performance is enhanced as long as it isn't degraded. The weight savings is worth the swap. Now I'm just trying to decide if the sound is a good thing or a bad thing. |

Ok...Here goes. I just got back from a 50 mile run. I literally forgot how smooth the stock muffler is. I've installed both a Wileyco and a D&D and these are my findings. Wileyco, bottom end power top end loss. D&D,low end loss, mid range gain. The D&D I did'nt get a chance to play around with Ecm spy so I don't know if I would've had a different experience. The stock muffler the power delivery is smooth all the way through I just wish it had a little more growl to it. For the time being and my present circumstance the stock is going to stay on for awhile. OOHH! and by the way I love this bike,It's my B!@#$ |
