Hi all

Something similar is happening in my X1 from a while back up to now.

For some time now and from time to time my speedo not reads the
current speed and just don't know how fast I'm going. Just it happens
on high speeds. When I go at 6.300 rpm in 5th gear my speedo reads 120 mph (which can't be true) and from time to time it reads 140mph (that truly speed). The speedometer seems to have a hard time going from there up (from 120 mph up) and reading more speed. Sometimes also the needle fall from 120 Mph to 100 Mph and then quickly climb up to 120 mph.

I'm racking my brain trying to figure out what is causing this problem. Really frustrating that I can't even figure out what the source of the problem is.

Bizarre problem. It is intermittent and comes and goes. It seems to be more of an electrical issue.

I tried to fix it taking the sensor out and cleaning the metal shavings off and it didn't help at all.

I swapped speedometer unit and it made no change.

Installed for a new one P/N 74431-01B and it still doing the same
thing.

I checked and cleaned all the connectors (speed sensor, speedo, etc) with contact cleaner and put dielectric grease on the connectors. Switching out relays nor neither made no difference.

I could not find the problem, to no avail, still no fix.

I have no idea what is going on.....

Since it seems to be temprature related, start there.
Is the pickup easily accessable on the XB9? I don't remember for sure or not.
If so, when you get back from a ride and the speedo is hosed, quickly pull the sensor, hit it with some component cooler and put it back in.
Take it down the road ASAP before it warms back up. If you really cool it down, you should have about a minute before it warms back up.
The pickups are friction fit with an O ring, I'd just push it into position, skip the bolt and go for a block or so to see if it works.
If it does, you found the problem. If not, do the same for the speedo itself and see if that does it. The speedo will be more difficult as it's not easy to get to.

6300RPM in 5th gear on a stock X1 is about 126.5 MPH, depending on tire life, pressure, etc.

My guess about your intermittent issue, a wire may have internal damage that isn't visible, and it is only breaking the connection at high speeds due to stress from the environment. Unfortunately, it isn't going to be easy to pinpoint : (

Well, I'm glad that is one problem I don't have to worry about. I have yet to hit 6300 in 4th gear let alone 5th...

Many thanks for your reply Froggy.

My X1 does not have a stock engine, it has some engine mods and it pull 102.5 Hp & 90 Nm torque at rear wheel and 147 Mph in top speed.

You are right Froggy, It is intermittent and comes and goes. It seems to be more of an electrical issue related to the wiring of speedo.

This is driving me crazy. Really frustrating but rest assured...I haven't given up on it. I'm going to have to scratching my head here.

Best regards.

Sorry, I messed up about the torque. I meant to say 90 ft.lb = 122 Nm

I will Keep you updated on what I find.

Solved!.
Well Finally found my problem. Turned out be a weak battery (weird but true, this is something I have never seen before),
It's just weird because I had enough power to turn the engine over and get spark but not as strong as run well.

The battery is gone last week.....I have put a new one and the problem went away.

This battery lasted 6 years, I think that's OK

This has been bugging me all year!!.

Thanks to all who responded and added their suggestions for what might be my issue.

Regards.

Glad to hear. At the risk of oversimplification, it looks like at the end of the day, most X1 issues can be boiled down to battery and intake seals!! Usually totally unrelated electrical symptoms are battery related. And similarly strange running/idle related issues can be attributed to leaking intake seals...

I completely agree with you. That's what it looks like to me as well.

Kind regards.
